A Great First Year For NHS Ice Hockey

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Newtown High School Ice Hockey Team, we would like to thank all of the members of the community who supported their first full varsity session. As you may or may not be aware, the team receives absolutely no financial support from either the Board of Education or the high school athletic department. The full cost of putting a team on ice, paying for coaches, equipment, and transportation is undertaken by the players, their families, and shared by all of the wonderful individuals and businesses in town who supported our various fundraising projects and made direct financial donations.

Special thanks has to go the Benores, the Sharpes, and the Friedmans who paid for the team’s uniforms, Scott Gibney of MasterCard International, and to the Blue and Gold Club for their generous support. To everyone who bought a season’s ticket, thank you. Newtown sold more season tickets than any other school using the Danbury Ice Arena as their home ice and this effort has earned us a $1,000 credit towards next season’s practice time. Thank you to The Bee’s Kim Harmon who provided excellent coverage of this past season. Thank you to all of the parents and friends who worked at and contributed to the fundraisers and provided transportation during the year. We would be remiss if we failed to thank our bus driver and good luck charm Helen Polumbo, who adopted the team and vice versa.

This season was our second year of competition and our first year as a full varsity sport. Anchored by solid play from a core of seniors and guided by coaches Ken Kantor and Paul Esposito, your Newtown High School Ice Hockey team qualified for both the SWC conference playoffs and the CIAC Division II State Tournament. These are two strong achievements for a first year varsity program.  We are confident that a solid foundation is being formed for a program that will hopefully grow and succeed in the future.

Thank you,

Charles Borchetta
