Lacrosse Girls Crush Competitors

By Andy Hutchison

Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team, following a 16-7 win at Weston on April 21 and a 20-3 drubbing of Stratford at Treadwell Park on April 22, has outscored teams 118-52 in seven games, during which the Nighthawks are 6-1 (the only loss coming to nonconference foe Wilton).

In the win at Weston, Lisa Vendel found the back of the net on five of her seven shots on goal. Vendel also assisted four tallies.

Meghan Bridges had three goals and three assists, and Kaitlyn Brophy scored three times.

Meaghan Carney scored twice and Katie Canavan, Erin Brown, and Erin Kenning all scored once. Canavan added a pair of assists as Weston dropped its fourth game in six tries to begin the season.

Vendel and Tressa Scott both scooped four ground balls, and Brown and Kaley Kruger both picked up two as the Hawks compiled 27 as a team. Goaltender Celeste Chueng made nine saves.

Against Stratford, Newtown left no doubt about the way things would finish as the Hawks jumped out to a 15-1 halftime lead against their winless South-West Conference counterparts.

Vendel scored four times, Brophy had three goals, and Bridges registered four assists. Cheung and Jill Jagoe split time guarding the nets for the Hawks and saw limited action, stopping a combined four shots as Newtown controlled the ball for almost the entire afternoon.
