Newtown Squirts Hockey Team Second In State
The Western Connecticut Youth Hockey Leagueâs Squirt B team, with its hefty contingent of Newtown players, earned second place at this past weekendâs Connecticut Hockey Conference finals in Bolton.
The boys lost their first game, 5-1 to Simsbury on February 18, but rebounded for a 5-0 win over Northeastern on February 20. Newtownâs Ethan Cox and Justin Moore both put pucks in the net in the shutout.
In their afternoon match-up against Central Connecticut, the Squirts prevailed 6-3. Newtown wingers Devin Marsh and Riley Burns each scored and strong defense from Nate Torre-Tasso helped keep Central to just three goals.Â
The next morning, the Squirts returned to the Bolton Ice Palace to take on West Hartford. The Squirts won 6-2, as Cox and Moore scored. The win set the team up for a final-round game/ rematch with Simsbury.
Burns and Marsh scored and Torre-Tasso played well on defense but the local skaters fell short 3-2 in the championship game. The team, coached by Newtownâs Dan Marsh, earned the second-place trophy for its division.
