Lewis E. Belward, 88, of Newtown and Huntington, died February 20. Born in New Canaan, he was the son of Alice (Buttery) and Percy Belward. As a young man, Mr Belward was a volunteer with the Silvermine Fire Department. After he married Janet, they raised their family in Norwalk, where he served on the Board of Directors for the YMCA and the Planning and Zoning Commission. A quality control inspector for the Barnes Engineering Company, he retired in 1985. He and his wife lived many years in Rowayton where he started the Lighthouse Lamp Repair business.
He was devoted to his family and one of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. Throughout his life he was also a strong advocate for the rights of people with physical disabilities.
He is survived by two sons, William Belward and his wife, Deborah, of Newtown and Peter Belward and his wife, Wendy, of Derby; two daughters, Sandra Norden of Middlebury and Maylah Uhlinger and her husband, Daniel, of Manchester; 12 cherished grandchildren; six much-loved great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law; a nephew; and devoted friend and caregiver, Aurimas Grimza. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Janet (Johnson) Belward, and his son-in-law Gary Norden.
His family will receive friends Saturday, February 27, beginning at 10 am, at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue, Norwalk. A memorial service will take place at 11 am, with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery.
