Snow Pushes Wrestling To Wednesday; NHS Sports Update
Snow is at it again – this time postponing the Newtown High School wrestling team’s Senior Night clash with New Fairfield. The meet, originally scheduled for Monday, February 9, has been postponed until Wednesday, February 11. Start time of 7 pm remains the same.
The Nighthawk grapplers are coming off a win over Notre Dame-Fairfield on February 4. They’re gearing up for the South-West Conference championships, set to take place at Stratford’s Bunnell High School on February 14.
Here’s a recap of recent action from the mats, courts, track, ice, and pool – and a look at upcoming games (weather permitting of course):
On The Mats
Newtown High’s wrestling team scored a 66-12 victory over visiting Notre Dame-Fairfield in their most recent competition. Newtown won seven bouts via forfeit. Here are Newtown’s other winning performances: 160: Joe Accousti pinned Matt Merced in :27. 170: Connor LeMay pinned Wesley Desilva in 2:54. 182: Anthony Falbo pinned Kendrick Bollier in :58. 195: Tom Long pinned Tyler McMillian in 2:14.
Also on the mats – the gymnastics squad is scheduled to visit New Milford at 5 pm on Tuesday, February 10. The team will participate in the SWC championship meet, also at New Milford High, on Thursday, February 12. The competitions on the floor, beam, vault, and bars are slated to begin at 5 pm.
In The Pool; On The Ice And Track
The boys’ swimming and diving team is scheduled to visit defending state champion Brookfield, at The Dive Shop, at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, February 10. The Nighthawks will have their final home meet of the regular campaign on Wednesday, February 18, when Joel Barlow of Redding visits for a 7 pm start. The postseason doesn’t begin until early March.
Newtown’s hockey team dropped a 9-1 decision to EO Smith-Tolland at Danbury Ice Arena on February 7. Jack Hanley scored Newtown’s lone goal, off assists from Domenic Cartelli and Ethan Cox. Sophomore goaltender John McCann, making his first varsity start, kicked aside 24 shots. The Nighthawk skaters are set to visit Masuk of Monroe, at The Rinks at Shelton on Wednesday, February 11 – the puck drops at 6:30 pm.
Newtown High’s girls’ and boys’ indoor track teams competed in the SWC championships in New Haven on February 7. The NHS girls had a school record-setting performance from its 4x800 meter relay team, and both squads recorded some great performances (see related story).
From The Hardwood
The girls’ cagers, coming off a 43-32 victory at Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on February 6, will be home to take on New Fairfield on Tuesday, February 10 – tipoff is set for 7 pm. Then, the Nighthawks have just two games remaining before the start of postseason: A Friday, February 13 visit to Masuk of Monroe and Tuesday, February 17 home contest with Pomperaug of Southbury, both at 7 pm. The Nighthawks are 13-4 overall and 9-1 in conference play; New Fairfield is the only unbeaten team in the SWC, at 10-0, and the Rebels are 16-1 overall. New Fairfield competes in the Patriot Division, and the Nighthawks are in the Colonial Division. Newtown is vying for the top spot in the Colonial, and a first-round SWC tourney home game. Pomperaug, at 8-2 in conference play, is right on Newtown’s heels, making for some potentially crucial games down the stretch.
Newtown’s boys’ basketball team, coming off a 70-56 setback to host Immaculate of Danbury on February 7, will visit New Fairfield on Tuesday, February 10, and return home to play Masuk on Friday, February 13 – both at 7 pm. Newtown is 11-4 overall and 6-2 in conference action.
The Nighthawks defeated visiting Kolbe, 80-38, on February 5. Harrison Depuy had 16 points; Will Dalton had 14 points, six assists, and three steals; and Dylan Palumbo contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Jacob Burden also had a baker’s dozen point performance, which included a trio of 3-pointers, and came away with a pair of steals. Charlie Huegi dropped in seven points and had two steals; Sam Duffy had seven points; Jeremy Doski had seven rebounds, seven assists, and three steals; and Mason Melillo had four points and two steals.
In the loss to Immaculate, Doski had 14 points; Depuy scored 13; Burden had 12 – on four 3-pointers – and Doski added nine. Depuy pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked five shots; Huegi dished out four assists; and Burden, Depuy, and Doski had two steals apiece.
