Team Trades Pucks For Putts To Defray Cost To Play
The Newtown Ice Hockey Booster Club has scheduled a golf tournament fundraiser to support the Newtown High School Ice Hockey team.
The team receives minimal support from the Board of Education, with the majority of the program costs covered by parents.
The event is sponsored by Dental Associates and will be held Friday, June 26, at the Candlewood Valley Country Club in New Milford.
The cost is $550 per foursome or $149 per individual golfer and includes 18 holes of golf, golf carts, breakfast, dinner, and a gift bag. Registration forms are available online at newtownhockey.com or by contacting Donna Solomons via email at Donnasolomons@earthlink.net or by phone at 364-0321.
The tournament check-in time is at 8:30 am, for a tee-off time of 10 am and is a best ball/scramble format. This allows all golfers in a foursome to hit from the best ball on their second shot.
Events include beat the pro, closest to the pin, hole in one, longest drive, and a hockey themed Happy Gilmore hole based on the hit movie. A Wii golf tournament will also run throughout the day in the clubhouse.
Prizes include the chance to win a three-year lease on a Volvo XC60, a 42-inch flat screen TV, Yankees tickets, and many others.
This past year, each hockey player paid more than $1,500 to cover the cost of ice time, uniforms, equipment, buses, referees, and medical supervision at each home game.
