Recreation Offers Dog Training

Newtown Parks and Recreation offers several dog training courses as follows:

Canine Good Citizen Program: This course prepares students for the CGC and/or Therapy Dog International certificate, required by most health care facilities for visiting dogs and handlers. Open to all dogs who have completed the Family Manners Skills class, CGC stresses good manners in the presence of people and other dogs. Testing for the CGC is included in the fee. Note: TDI will not certify dogs under one year of age.

Thursdays, May 7 to June 11, 7:30 - 8:15 pm; Ages: 14 and up; Cost: $150.

Dog Obedience Level 1: This class is designed for dogs 4 months of age and older with no formal training. All elements of basic canine training will be covered including the sit, down, stay, recall, heel, jumping, chewing and good manners will be addressed.

Thursdays, May 7 to June 11, 7:30 - 8:15 pm; Ages 14 and up; Cost: $175.

A.K.C. S.T.A.R Puppy Program:This new program is designed to get new puppies and owners off to a good start. The AKC Puppy S.T.A.R program is an incentive program for responsible dog owners who have taken the time to train and socialize their dogs. S.T.A.R is an acroynm for socialization, training, activity and a responsible owner, all the things a puppy needs to have a good life. Life skills will be taught to new pups and include the basic commands such as sit, down, stay, coming when called, proper socialization and interactions as well as responsible dog ownership. A certified CGC(Canine Good Citizen) Evaluator will teach this course. This class is open to all pups up to one year of age.

Thursdays, May 7 to June 11, 6:30 - 7:15 pm; Ages: 14 and up; Cost: $175.

Dog Obedience Level 2: This class is for the graduates of the Level 1 class. This class will further enhance the relationship between the pet and owner. Consistency and reliability will be significantly improved through distraction and attention training. Introduction to off-lead stays and recalls will be introduced.

Thursdays, May 7 to June 11, 6:30 - 7:15 pm; Ages: 14 and up; Cost: $130.
