As the day grew hotter, offenses in the Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball League's
"A" Division got cooler. In the season's first real scorcher, 28 runs went up
on the board in the day's first game, 14 in the second, and only eight in the
afternoon finale.
In that eight-run contest, Ricky Kasbarian mashed a two-run homer with one out
in the bottom of the ninth to lift R&R Foundations to a 5-3 win over Western
Connecticut Federal Credit Union, who had the misfortune of having to play a
double header in the near-100 degree heat.
Jim McHatton and Mark Burroughs both had two hits to lead the R&R offense,
while Kevin Booker totalled three hits for WCFCU to lead all hitters in the
ballgame. Bill Kelchner was 2-for-3 for WCFCU as well.
Dave Green, Gary Andrews, and George Matern connected on back-to-back-to-back
home runs in the first inning as Newtown Exxon got out to a 4-0 lead and held
on to beat WCFCU, 8-6 in the late-morning matchup. Andy Shpunt led the winners
with a 3-for-5 showing. Doug Rose and Doug Dean both had three-hit efforts for
WCFCU, both hitting home runs as well.
First-place Catering By George got the whole place smoking, Sunday, scoring
eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete a comeback and beat
the upset-minded Gervais Bros, 18-10.
Doug Otton led Georges with a 4-for-5 day, while Scott Terrill, Jimmy
D'Angelo, and Chris D'Angelo all contributed three-hit days. Bob Kick banged a
two-run homer for the winners.
For Gervais, Tom Wyatt was 3-for-3 with three home runs, Chris Daly was
3-for-4 with a homer, and Gino LoRicco added his third homer of the season.
"B" Division
Hurd Construction plated just enough runs to sweep a Treadwell Park double
header, beating Steve's Liquor by two in the first game and then edging ATP
Landscaping by one in the capper.
Hurd got three hits from the bat of Billy Girard including a triple and two
RBI as it beat Steve's, 10-8. Ross Schieffer and Jim Muraski both contributed
two hits, driving in three runs between them. Jim Chappius, Al Rocca, and Phil
McGahren each had three hits for Steve's, who scored five runs in the first
inning before fizzling out.
In the second game of its set, Hurd took a 6-3 lead to the ninth inning and
held off a late ATP surge, hanging on to win 6-5. Scott Hurd, Muraski, Bill
Girard, and Matt Girard all had two hits to lead the winners. Matt Gee had
three hits for ATP while teammates Chris Cuomo and Scott Keller each banged
home runs.
John Seman and Karl Strait each launched three-run homers and Dennis VanZilan
added a solo shot as Apex Glass beat up on J&M Construction, 11-4. Mike Hastey
had four hits and scored a pair of runs to lead Apex at the plate. Mark Svanda
and Jim Dudeck both had three hits for the losing cause.
Kent Orr capped off a 4-for-5, seven-RBI day with an RBI double in the bottom
of the ninth inning that left C&S Septic standing on the field and lifted
first-place My Place Pizza to a thrilling 13-12 victory. In his first game of
the season, Orr hit for the cycle to lead the winners all morning. Rich
Chiarella also had a 4-for-5 game which included a home run, while Rich
Treadwell added three hits to the cause. Bill Thebedo and Greg Beardsley had
three hits for C&S.
The boys from Tilford Piano Movers continued to play beautiful music with
their bats, pounding out a total of 20 hits in a 17-5 win over Newtown Septic.
Leading the way for the winners were Brian Maciolek, who had four hits, and
Tim McMahon and Dave French, who each added three. French and Spencer Real
each smacked three-run homers for Tilford's. Bob Mammone's 2-for-3 day at the
plate was the best Newtown Septic had to offer.

Playoffs/Championship
Jayme Beckham slugged a home run as Perry Creative Contractors defeated
Tendler Real Estate, 16-8, in the Youth Softball Junior Division championship
game.
PCC finished the season 10-1-1.
In the final, Lauren Adamek had an unassisted double play to spark the defense
while Lauren Bonacci did a good job covering second base and Emily Cappa
caught a good game. Libby Fulkerson and Jessica Borchetta anchored the
outfield defense.
For Tendler Real Estate, Erin Thomas and Stephanie Lewis pitched well. Angela
Shannon had a good day behind the play and there was some find fielding by
Laurie Miller, Jessica Ward, Mallory McQuail and Genevieve McCann.
PCC advanced to the championship game with a 12-11 win over Newtown Hardware
in the semi-finals. In that game, Jessica Oswald pitched well as Kelly
Baranowski collected a pair of hits and Diana Bonacci drove in the
game-winning run. Lauren Thibdeau, Jennifer Perry and Alison Boyle paced the
defense.
For Newtown Hardware, Helen Buonogurio clouted three homers while Allison
Favreau doubled twice and singled twice. Antoinette Ayli also doubled while
Amanda Marsilio anchored the defense.
In other games:
Superstar Sports 15, Dual Lite 9 - Sarah Dacey homered, Lauren Terry tripled
and Sarajane Lewis had a pair of doubles to pace Superstar Sports over Dual
Lite. Daisha Manfredonia also hurled four scoreless innings. For Dual Lite,
Liz Hoffman, Cindy Schlier, and Sarah Lynch doubled. Lynch also pitched well
in a losing effort.
Youth Soccer 2 (Rockets)
The Newtown Rockets haven't been together that long - only three months, in
fact - but the 15-and-under boys' soccer team didn't have to wait to become
successful.
The Rockets, formed in March, won the Maine Coastal Summer Challenge
championship last weekend at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
A 2-1 win over Vermont won the Rockets the title.
The Newtown shooters found the net 15 times in four games, posting a pair of
shutouts along with a 7-1 blowout prior to the championship victory over
Vermont's state champions.
George Antonopoulis had the hot foot, with six goals, but the offense did not
stop there. Rob Anders had three goals, while Craig Arsenault scored two, and
Reid Warner, Eric Young, Nate Del Vecchio and Brent Kochuba had one apiece.
Young, Arsenault, Warner and Brian Davis also recorded assists.
Ryan Loring and Todd Burns, meanwhile, allowed just one goal apiece while
sharing the goalkeeping duties during the weekend.
Also playing well were MJ Colgan, Justin Davis, Chris Des Biens, Rob
Merrifield, Mike Messemer, Sean Ratchford, and Eric Vollmer. Bobby Murdy was
the honorary captain for the tournament, having been sidelined with a broken
wrist.
"For a group of boys who barely knew each other's names two months ago," said
coach Charlie Merrifield, who led the team along with Neil Warner and John Del
Vecchio, "this is just terrific."
