Arthur Russell Taylor Denues

Arthur Russell Taylor Denues, 93, died June 23 in Raleigh, N.C. He was born August 16, 1914, in Baltimore, Md., to John and Constance Haviland Taylor Denues. Mr Denues and his family lived in Newtown from 1973 to 1975.

His early interest in music continued throughout his life. He played a variety of keyboards, sang tenor, and enjoyed classical works. Mr Denues graduated from Johns Hopkins University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in gas engineering. His doctorate was completed two years later at the University of Maryland, when he was 24 years old. He later completed theological studies and became an Episcopal priest.

Mr Denues served in the US Army, attaining the rank of Lt Colonel and received the Legion of Merit in 1946. Some highlights of his professional life include his position as vice president of Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, research at the Albert Schweitzer hospital in Lamberene, Gabon, West Africa, and his founding and presidency for 30 years of Cancirco, the Cancer International Research Cooperative (1962–1992).

The Rev Dr Arthur Russell Taylor Denues was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Florence Mildred Smith, who died last November; and by his son, John. He is survived by four daughters and their spouses, Anne and Gregory Weik of Weems, Va., Ginna Denues and Valerie Holman of San Ramon, Calif., Katherine and William Kovacs of Raleigh, N.C., and Elizabeth and John Edward Davis of Falls Church, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Russell Taylor Denues II and Sandy of Lantana, Fla.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. The family thanks friends and family for all kind thoughts.
