Council Will Consider 9/11 Resolution
A proposed resolution calling for support of the independent commission investigating the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be on the agenda of the Legislative Council meeting on Wednesday, October 15.
James Allen of Main Street, organizer of a grassroots effort to effort to get Newtown to support the resolution, said on Wednesday that he had spoken to legislative district representative Peggy Baiad and she had asked Council President Don Studley to put it on the meeting agenda.
âItâs just for discussion purposes,â Mrs Baiad said. âI donât know what good it would even do for Newtown to approve the resolution. But you have to give [Mr Allen] credit for his enthusiasm.â
The resolution states that the town supports the Independent 9/11 Commissionâs Family Steering Committee in its request for improvements and guarantees in the proceedings and performance of the commission. The resolution also calls on the stateâs US senators and representatives to âwork diligentlyâ toward legislation supporting the Family Steering Committeeâs proposals and asks the Senate and House Intelligence Committees to strictly review any redactions in the final report that may be made by the Bush administration.
âThe town of Newtown further calls on other towns and cities to pass similar resolutions to help ensure that these important questions and concerns assume their proper place in our national dialogue,â the resolution said.
Mr Allen had planned to hold meeting on October 8 at the Meeting House to garner signatures on a petition asking that the resolution be placed on the council agenda.

The council meeting will be held 7:30 pm on Wednesday, October 15, at the C.H. Booth Library meeting room.
