Support The Schaghticokes

To the Editor:

Connecticut’s officials oppose more Indian casinos, yet the state sells lottery tickets with pictures of slot machines and roulette wheels on them. Churches and civic organizations have bingo. Does Congresswoman Nancy Johnson target these gambling opportunities in her bill to terminate “the rag tag group,” as she called the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation? No. So, is opposition to the tribe’s federal recognition really about gambling? My guess is it’s really about Kent not wanting working class citizens in their rich community.

Senator Dodd co-sponsored a bill to apologize to American Indians for past depredations. Why apologize for the past when Congress continues to abuse Indians in the present with bills like Johnson’s? Connecticut has recognized the Schaghticokes for nearly 300 years and now wants to stop. Where’s the state’s apology for taking Indian lands and trying to force them to abandon their culture?

Officials should focus on the prices of gas, oil, drugs, and health insurance (if you have it); on homeland security, social security, and eminent domain (fear the government, not the Indians, on that one!). Where are the jobs people seek? Johnson’s missed vote angered sub base backers; move it to Kent, rename it the Schaghticoke Tribe and she would have been there.

When Governor Rowland got into trouble, he shifted attention from himself by starting to oppose the tribe’s federal recognition. Governor Rell continued the opposition. The attorney general keeps us focused on Indian issues, while leaving unexplained the sweet deal government contracts he approved under Rowland.

Tribes petitioned for federal recognition years before gaming was allowed. Recognition is about Indian culture, traditions, and history. Elected officials have spent hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars on an enormous political effort, disguised as a phony moralistic opposition to gaming, to strip away Indian rights and manipulate the public to accept only their voice as the truth.

I question our politicians’ motives. So should you. I found and signed a petition supporting the Schaghticokes at www.Schaghticoke.com. So should you.
