National Poetry Month Celebration Planned

SOUTHBURY — The Connecticut Poetry Society will offer a free public program on Saturday, August 3, as the society – and writers across the country – kick off National Poetry Month.

The program will be at Southbury Public Library, 561 Main Street South (Route 6, between Southbury Town Hall and Pomperaug Elementary School). The event will run from 1 to 4 pm.

Guest speaker will be Margaret Gibson, a renowned published poet, mentor and professor at the University of Connecticut.

The celebration will begin with a reading from the winners of the 2003-04 CPS sponsored contests, followed by a reading from Ms Gibson, with a book signing to follow. A first-come, first-serve for open mic readings following Ms Gibson’s program will also be offered.

Light refreshments will be served.

Founded in 1974 The Connecticut Poetry Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of poetry with a twenty-five year tradition of excellence in publishing the work of national and Connecticut poets. Its mission is to support the art form of poetry with chapter meetings, contests, and events dedicated to CPS members throughout the state.
