This week in 1991
The Newtown High School baseball team posted 32 runs as it won three-of-four
games to climb back into the thick of the Western Connecticut Conference
playoff picture. In a 14-11 win over New Fairfield, Matt Daly, Scott Lish,
Mike Waterbury, Chris D'Angelo, Rob Ball, and Jamie Quinlan all had two hits.
Mike Schiffer was 2-for-2 in an 8-1 win over New Milford as Steve Darling
fired five strong innings to earn the win. Waterbury went 3-for-4 in a 5-3
loss to Immaculate, but D'Angelo followed that up with a 2-for-3 effort that
included a game-winning two-run double in a 7-4 win over Abbott Tech.
This week in 1986
In a dramatic finish that came down to the 18th hole, the Newtown High golf
team earned a 7 1 / 2 -7 1 / 2 tie with Joel Barlow to remain unbeaten in the
early stages of the new season. Tom Traub's 3-0 victory (front side, back
side, and total) was instrumental in the draw as was teammate Matt Haynos' 2-1
win. Other points were scored by Brian Bilia (1), Mike Early (1), and the
team's top golfer, Steve Bussell who halved the back side to score one-half a
point.
This week in 1981
Newtown High baseball coach Zyg Olbrys earned career victory number 100 as
senior Bob Hickson fired a complete-game one hitter to beat Pomperaug, 17-1.
Hickson struck out eight and walked seven to improve his record to 4-0 and
Newtown's to 5-3. Offensive stars were Mark Pottinger (four hits), Bob Danuzar
(three), Joe Crimi (two doubles), and Ed Shortt and Rich Dexter who both
ripped RBI triples.
This week in 1976
Newtown Middle School student, Diane King, was selected by the Connecticut
Amateur Athletic Union to be a member of the Connecticut Age-Group All-Star
team. King and the team will travel to Puerto Rico to face the top swimmers
from Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. King, 12, qualified for the
team by placing second in the 500 free at the Age Group Championships. King
has been swimming since age three.
This week in 1971
According to Gary Leavitt in his weekly " Eye on the High " column, Joe Gallo
took four first places and the fully recuperated Doug Grove took a first and a
second as the NHS track and field team made coach Roger Streeter a happy man
with a 79 1 / 2 -44 1 / 2 win over Joel Barlow. Mr Pesce and Mr Mann are also
happy. Their golf team has a 1-1 league record.
