Support For High School Creativity
BROOKFIELD â Greater Danbury area high school students will benefit from a unique educational program created by Brookfield Craft Center and supported by The Albert Wadsworth & Helen Clark Meserve Memorial Fund.
A grant of $3,000 has been awarded to the craft center by the private foundation, which serves the greater Danbury area. Grant funding will provide ten high school students with scholarship aid to study at the non-profit center to learn the skills and values of fine craftsmanship and good design.
The program, entitled âThe High School Creativity Program,â was created at Brookfield Craft Center in the early 1990s and has been supported by the Meserve Fund and other foundations. Thus far the program has served over 200 area students.
According to Brookfield Craft Center Executive Director John I. Russell, âStudents selected for the program can choose from more than 300 different arts and crafts topics taught by professional artisans from throughout the nation. Students work in small groups with individualized instruction to enhance their creativity, design skills and artistic and technical abilities.â
The center offers basic, intermediate and master-level classes and workshops in traditional media such as woodworking, metalsmithing, ceramics, fibers/weaving, surface design, glassblowing, stained glass, paper and books arts as well as drawing, design and business/marketing for artists.
BCC Education Director Kristin Muller stated: âOur classes and workshops instill important skills and values that are universal; including respect for tools and materials, creative problem solving abilities, the capacity to work cooperatively on team projects, decision making, self-discipline, project planning and many other essential life/work skills.â
Greater Danbury area high school students interested in being considered for the program should contact their art teacher or guidance department, or they may call Brookfield Craft Center at 775-4526.
