U13 Samba Soccer Club Has Success In Italy
The Newtown-based Samba U13 boysâ premier soccer team played in the AC Milan Junior Pro Club Invitational tournament in Montecatini, Italy, recently. The boys had an opportunity to compete against such well-known European Soccer clubs as AC Milan and AC Siena.
The Samba team, because of its strong performances before going to Italy, competed in the toughest division which included Siena, AC Milan and AC Siena. Although the boys were not victorious, they held their own, limiting goals scored against and wound up taking home a 14th place trophy out of 18 teams.Â
Samba was awarded the âBest Inaugural Teamâ trophy which declared it the best of four teams which were playing in the pro tournament for the first time. The boys got a taste of what it is like to âlive soccerâ as the pro 13-year-olds do in Italy. They even had a rare sighting of the famous Paulo Maldini who attended the match to see his son play on AC Milan.
The team was coached by John Salvatore, Brain Neumeyer and Joe Mancini, and will now chase after the Connecticut State Cup and U13 Division 1 titles.
