MIDGETS

Bethel 14, Newtown 6

The 2005 season came to an abrupt end for the Newtown Midgets with a 14-6 loss to Bethel in the Candlewood Valley League semifinals.

Tucker Schmidt hit Tory Deakin on a slant pass for the lone Newtown touchdown.

The ‘Hawks were able to put something together their opening drive, going eight plays with the strong running of Connor McNamara and Kyle O’Connor. But the drive stalled and the locals were forced to punt.

Later, the Midgets moved the ball across midfield to the Bethel 40, but once again the ‘Hawks were forced to punt. Bethel returned the punt to the Newtown 40 yard line and put together an impressive drive, taking only six plays to move the 40 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

The Midgets got the ball back and put together an impressive 67-yard drive. Schmidt connected on a pass to Nicky Tarantino despite heavy pressure and Tarantino’s diving catch between two defenders gained 30 yards. Schmidt rolled left on the next play and hit Deakin with a perfect strike for another first down.

After getting some tough yards inside by O’Connor and McNamara, Schmidt got the Bethel defense to bite on a nice play action fake and whipped a slant pass to Deakin, who ran in for they tying touchdown. Newtown could not convert the extra point, and the score remained tied at six going into halftime.

The second half started on a positive note as the ‘Hawks defense held Bethel to just a few yards. A great defensive effort from Tim Willmott, Nick Tramontozi and Taylor Carnes set the tone for the third quarter, but the offense could not get moving against Bethel.

Bethel started the fourth quarter with some strong outside runs. The Newtown defense forced a fumble, but Bethel was quick to jump on the loose ball and even made a first down in the scramble for possession. The result of this missed opportunity would ultimately spell the end of the Nighthawk’s season as Bethel was able to punch in a touchdown on yet another inside run.

After the kick, Bethel led 14-6.

Newtown took the kick out to its own 30. From there, nice blocking from Tyler Davenport, Kevin Brown and Brian Kuruc helped Newtown gain positive yardage, but the turnover goblins rose up and bit the ‘Hawks for a final time. Newtown fumbled, Bethel took possession, and ran out the clock to secure the victory and send the Midgets home for the winter.

JUNIOR PEE WEES

Newtown Gold 39, Newtown Blue 19

Max Lopez scored on runs of 37 and 42 yards and a fumble return of 60 yards to lead the Newtown Golds to a 39-19 win over the Newtown Blues in the Candlewood Valley League semi-finals.

The Golds, behind the powerful running of Lopez and the speed of Danny Hebert and Pat Capozziello, ran out to a big first half lead and the held off a furious second half rally by the Blues to earn a trip to the finals.

The Golds struck early in the first quarter after the defense – led by Michael Lengel and Pat Riccardi – stopped a long Blues drive. Facing a third and 14 from their own 20, Gold quarterback Hebert rolled out and hit Travis LeBlanc for an 80-yard touchdown pass and with the extra point from Capozziello the Golds were on top, 7-0.

Then following a fumble recovery by KC Condon, Lopez slashed his way up the middle for a 37-yard TD. With Cappoziello again running in the extra points, the Golds expanded their lead to 14-0. On the ensuing Blue possession, Travis LeBlanc stepped in front of a Blue receiver for an interception and Lopez again went to work, carrying the ball for three straight plays and breaking loose for a 42-yard TD run.

The extra-point kick by LeBlanc failed, but the Golds were on top 20-0.

The offensive line blockings from Tom Bauer, Tom Gleason, Matt White, Mike Lengel and Jack Kearney was a key to the success of the Gold attack in the first half.

In the second half the Blues got their running game going with DeVellis and Reynolds running behind Senf, Palladino and Morrissey and Riley Wurtz breaking loose for long range scores. But every time the Blues got going, Hebert would answer with a long TD to keep them at bay.

The scoring was completed when Lopez picked up a fumble and ran 60 yards to the end zone.

MIGHTY MITE GOLD

Newtown 13, Bethel 7

Nick Lotrecchiano scored two touchdowns to lead the Newtown Mighty Mite Gold to a 13-7 win over Bethel.

Newtown opened the game with a 30-yard pass from Lotrecchiano to Chase Wurtz, which set up Lotrecchiano’s 35-yard dash to the end zone.

Bryce Mather and Mike Cirone were tough on defense, shutting down the Bethel ends. Then, behind some great blocking on the left side by Jacob Burden, Colton Moroney and Mike Cirone, the Gold was able to get Lotrecchiano into the end zone again for a 13-0 lead.

Bethel did get on the board before halftime to close the gap to 13-7 and the second half was a defensive struggle, highlighted with some outstanding play on a goal line stand by Bubba Condon, Brian Kiley, Eric Cascone and Chance McMahon.
