Glorydays October 13, 1995
This week in 1990
Senior John Ball scored four goals (giving him 15 on the season) as the
Newtown High School soccer team beat Masuk and Immaculate 5-0, upping the
Indians' WCC winning streak to 32-straight games. The team hadn't surrendered
a single goal in 19-straight conference games and hadn't lost a game at home
in its last 24. In the two games, Eric Lipusz, Chris D'Angelo, and Rob Ball
also scored goals.
This week in 1985
The Newtown High boys' cross country team lost its star runner Joe Smith to a
stress fracture and lost 27-28 to Abbott Tech. Chris Pond and Craig McCarthy
placed first and second, but Tech filled in with third, fourth, fifth, and
sixth places to win it. Newtown's Jeff Bazinet placed seventh.
This week in 1980
Seven-year-old forward John Ball scored four goals to lead the Newtown Soccer
Club's Little Strikers to a 5-2 win over the Beagles. Melanie Huss, the only
girl on the team, scored the other goal for the winners as they improved to
3-0 on the season. Defensive stars for the Little Strikers were Brian Johnson,
Robbie Brookes, Craig Kolesar, Shane Chontos, and Christian Bauta. Robbie Ball
had two assists in the game as well.
This week in 1975
The Newtown High School girls' swim team continued its undefeated run with a
pair of decisive victories over Naugatuck and Milford. NHS swimming stars who
placed first at the two meets were Kelly Sullivan, Melissa Guck, Linda Polcyn,
Kim Bochino, Ruth Cassidy, Wendy Wilson, Carol Cassidy, Leslie Cogswell,
Tammie Komornick, and Terri Dujnic.
This week in 1970
The Newtown High School field hockey team picked up a pair of victories
beating Weston 2-1 and Masuk, 4-1. Barb Messinger, Janice Berls, Sandy Martin,
and Pat Farrell all scored goals as the team improved to 3-0-1.
This week in 1965
Jim Glover scored a Newtown High School record nine goals as the NHS soccer
team defeated Ridgefield 12-0. Glover then scored the winning goal in a 2-1
win over Watertown and added another in a 3-1 win over Wilton. Other NHS
scorers in the three-game set included Klaus Ertl, Rick Berglund, and Glen
Brier. The Indians raised their record to 5-3 moving into a first-place tie
with Wilton.
This week in 1960
Jim Tenney booted a pair of goals and Ronnie Hull and Johnny Norrell each
added one as the NHS soccer team beat West Haven, 4-2.
This week in 1955
After beating George Smart 3-and-2, defending Newtown Country Club golf
champion, Mike Hoitko, took on Jack Beaton in the first flight finals. In the
finals of the second flight, River Shannon and Clinton Archer saw their match
haulted after 19 holes because of darkness. The two were dead even at the
time.
This week in 1950
Mrs AJ Frazier entertained the Bridgeport Bowling and Pin Club at her home on
Lakeside Road to elect officers for the coming year. They were Marge Petrohai
(president), Jean Nash (first vice president), Kay Vescy (second vice
president), Helen Belien (secretary), and Mrs Frank Wallin (treasurer).
This week in 1945
The Newtown High tenth-grade class, captained by Violet Bailey, defeated
Loretta Nichols and the senior class, 4-2 in the school's inter-class girls'
soccer tourney. The junior class, captained by Bernice Carty, beat the
freshman class and Jan Pelletier, 3-0, in their matchup. The ninth-graders
then beat the eighth-graders, captained by Mary Starr Smith, 3-2. The junior
and sophomore class were scheduled to meet for the championship.
