âIn the interest of transparency I felt the best way to establish accountability was to hold a public forum with the Board of Education, Legislative Council, Board of Finance, and Board of Selectman,â Ms Wellman said, adding that the forum is appropriately scheduled in the public council chambers because it is an informational, nonpartisan activity.
âAnyone in attendance can ask a question and the panel will not [receive] questions in advance. Questions can be related to the town and/or the education side of the budget,â Ms Wellman said. She said the forum may also address questions provided to her in advance by individuals who may not be able to attend, or who would like to pose and receive answers without necessarily doing so in the public venue.
Anyone wishing to submit questions for consideration may do so by email to cwellms@gmail.com, with Budget Forum in the subject line.
âThe goal of this forum is to come together as a town and recap our last budget, ask questions with regard to financial decisions that were voted on, and know what oversight and control there is moving forward,â Ms Wellman said.
She observed that the latest budget process was frustrating to many, âand while we donât want to relive it, we clearly need a new approach moving forward.â
âWe are facing difficult economic times and a town forum...will empower the taxpayers of this town,â she said, adding that she hopes the session will help âeliminate any fear, uncertainty and doubt so that next year you know where your tax dollars are going so that you can make an informed decision that feels right for your family.â
Ms Wellman said the forum will be moderated by Jean Rabinow, who is a Trumbull attorney and representative of the State League of Women Voters.
Ms Wellman said School Superintendent Janet Robinson, school board Chairman Bill Hart and member Debbie Leidlein have agreed to attend, along with First Selectman Pat Llodra, Finance Director Bob Tait, finance board Chairman John Kortze, council Chairman Jeff Capeci and members Kevin Fitzgerald and Jan Andras.
Other officials may be added to the panel if their confirmations are received after press time. There is no charge to attend the event.
