B-Division-Softball-Playoffs

Full Text:

After a red-hot start to the season, followed by a brief cooling period, the

boys of My Place Pizza in the Newtown Softball League's 'B' Division got back

in the oven when it came cookin' time.

On Sunday, September 3, third-seeded My Place knocked off fourth-seeded

Steve's Liquor 19-9 in the winner's bracket finals, thus earning its

first-ever trip to the league title game.

My Place got a strong 5-for-5 showing from Gene Martin, a 4-for-4 day from

John Zadrovitz, and three hits each from Rich Treadwell and Rich Chiarella as

it advanced into September 10's 'B' league finals unscathed.

Looking to defend last year's 'B' Division title, Steve's Liquor posted two

runs in the top of the first and added two more in the second as it clung to

an early 4-1 lead. But Zadrovitz's solo home run leading off the My Place

second, lit the brick-oven spark.

My Place went on to score runs in each of the next five innings, building a

16-5 lead that it would never relinquish.

The game was actually decided in the bottom half of the fifth inning when

Treadwell singled with one out and scored on a triple by Chiarella. Zadrovitz,

Martin, Mark Staiti, Mark Tambascio, Mike Beigel, and Rich Staveck all

followed with singles producing a seven-run frame.

Larry Rice went 4-for-4 for Steve's, scoring four times in the leadoff spot,

and Dave Taylor, Don Hammond, Chris Meyers, and Vic Echendia all added three

hits, but the defending champs stranded a total of 16 men on base, leaving men

on in all nine innings.

On Sunday morning, September 10, Steve's will face second-seeded Apex Glass in

the loser's bracket final for a chance to play My Place at 10:45 for the

league title. My Place, which is 2-0 in the tournament, will have to be beaten

twice in order for either Steve's or Apex to win it.

The top-seeded Tilford Piano Movers were ousted in the first round of the

tournament, losing to both Steve's and Apex.
