The second annual Selectmen's Golf Tournament was Thursday, September 5 with

more than 43 local residents hitting the links for a good cause at the

Candlewood Valley Country Club in New Milford.

The golfers raised $2,600 to insure that every local youth will be guaranteed

an opportunity to participate in Little League, Pop Warner, a Parks &

Recreation sports camp, and/or any other town sports event, regardless of

their families' income.

"It went very well, except for a certain foursome," joked First Selectman

Cascella, who was referring to himself and his three teammates who ended up

collecting the booby prize for finishing with the high gross score of the day.

For finishing last, Mr Cascella, Joe Mahoney, Richard Simon and Glenn Santoro,

won a free golf lesson at Rock Ridge Country Club.

This year's first-place team, which shot a two-under-par for the victory,

included Mike Snyder, Peter Duhamel, Stephen Wippermann and Kevin Cragin.

In the closest to the pin contest, Deborah Osborne fired her shot to within

30« inches of the pin on the fourth hole and Mike Snyder came with 12'6" of

the pin on the 10th hole.

As Newtown's top elected official, Mr Cascella was selected to tee off first

in the shotgun start.

"I stepped up to the tee with the whole field behind me watching. It was

nerve-wracking," he recalled.

But as it turned out, the first selectman let loose his best shot of the day.

"They probably thought I had taken lessons over the winter," he laughed.

Celebrating their philanthropic round of golf, the club-wielding men and women

met in the clubhouse for a buffet lunch.

The first selectman thanked both the players and the sponsors for making the

event such a big success.

The tournament was directed by Newtown resident Bill Flood, a golf pro at the

Rock Ridge Country Club.

Parks & Recreation Director Barbara Kasbarian said she is aware of families in

town who do not sign their children up for youth sports because of their

financial situations. The golf tournament was started two years ago to help

cover the costs of those strapped for money.

The golfers included Bob Cascella, Joe Mahoney, Richard Simon, Glenn Santoro,

Mike Snyder, Peter Duhamel, Stephen Wippermann, Kevin Cragin, William Meyer,

Richard Sturdevant, James Lysaght, Ben Spragg, Gail Halapin, Nancy Larin,

Patricia Denlinger, William Nicholson, William Nicholson, Jr, Kim Danziger,

James Mannion, Bill Brimmer, Mark Killian, Jim Loruso, David Grogins, Jennifer

Chobor, Deborah Osborne, Michael Osborne, Joe Humeston, Bob Carroll, Ken

Evans, Jim Crick, Bob Tendler, John Kline, Jack Ryan, Gary Lemme, Charles

Tilson, Bert Boyce, Jim Kaiser, Ron Butera, Michael Zilinick and Rich Walsh.

This year's tee sponsors included Diamond Electric, Sandy and Walter Motyka,

Holcomb Fuel, Honan Funeral Home, Mary Ann and Tom Murtha, James Gaston

Family, Newtown Savings Bank, Newtown Rotary Club, Women Involved in Newtown,

Energywide Lighting Company, Newtown Car Care Center, Walker Industrial

Products, Nanavaty Certified Public Accountants and Fuss & O'Neill.

Donating gift certificates were Lamp Crafters and George's Pizza & Restaurant.
