ON THE ROAD/SHANNON HICKS

A few updates came in late last week concerning live entertainment at The

Village Cafe in Gaylordsville. While the early June dates arrived after last

week's deadline, a few more shows remain on the calendar for this month. On

June 12, RHYTHM EXCHANGE will perform its African/world music; Sunday, June

13, jazz with THE PHIL FORBES TRIO; Tuesday, June 15, punk bands HIGHSTRUNG,

KILL DEVIL HILLS, WOMEN ON HEROIN and BILLY'S BORK all have sets; Friday, June

18 will feature LITMUS with what is being billed as "avant/rock/dj/space

music"; and jazz will be the musical choice of the evening on Sunday, June 20,

with FEZHEN.

The cafe also wants to remind everyone that every Wednesday is open acoustic

mic night.

The cafe is at 1 South Kent Road (Route 7) in Gaylordsville, just before the

Gaylordsville Fire Department and just past the intersection with Route 55. If

you want to call ahead, push the buttons in this order: 860/355-5267.

Tuxedo Junction in Danbury will be hosting another record & CD convention this

weekend, on Sunday, June 13. I don't have details concerning the hours of the

show/sale, so call the club if you would like the specifics (including

admission price, usually around $4-$5) at 748-2561.

My mistake last week. Tickets for THE CRANBERRIES' show at the Oakdale (August

22 with Collective Soul) go on sale this weekend. Big apologies.

Tickets will be available as of 10 am Saturday, June 12. For Oakdale shows,

you need to visit the box office in person or call the box office directly

(265-1501) -- the Oakdale does not deal with Pro-Tix or TicketMaster.

More tickets are going on sale this weekend for the still-expanding summer

schedule at The Meadows in Hartford. Now that shows by 80s bands like MOTLEY

CRUE and THE SCORPIONS (not to mention JOURNEY and FOREIGNER), the return of

what radio 104 likes to call The Big Hair Scare continues with POISON, GREAT

WHITE, L.A. GUNS and RATT on Tuesday, July 13. Those tickets are $23.50 and

$31.50 for the pavilion seats and $15.50 on the lawn.

A little more in the modern rock vein, THE GOO GOO DOLLS are back in

Connecticut on Saturday, August 21. Those tickets are $27.50 for pavilion

seating and $20 on the lawn. Both shows have 7:30 start times. Tickets are

going on sale Saturday at 10 am through the Meadows' box office or any Pro-Tix

outlet.

I know this column generally does not venture into the folk music genre, but

this weekend there is a concert in Fairfield County that really shouldn't be

missed by anyone who enjoys folk. On Saturday night, JOHN GORKA, PATTY LARKIN,

CHERYL WHEELER and CLIFF EBERHARDT will all be performing at Beardsley Zoo's

Peacock Pavilion. Beardsley is at 1875 Noble Avenue in Bridgeport. Showtime is

7 pm, and tickets are $19.99 for adults, $10 for the kids. While all four of

these musicians, each outstanding on their own, have performed in the zoo's

popular outdoor ZooFolk concert series, this is the first joint venture by all

four.

Picnics are welcome, and that's why the zoo's gates will be opening at 6:15

for the 7 pm performance. Bring your blankets and chairs for seating. Leave

the dogs and other pets at home. There is no smoking in the concert area, and

no alcohol on the grounds. Save it all for later, if you must. Contact the zoo

at 394-6565.

Also as a departure from our usual flavor, a mention that SILK will be opening

for BRANDY next weekend at the SNET Oakdale Theatre. The reason I mention this

is two-fold. First, the July 19 date in Wallingford is the first date of the

band's summer tour with the young singing sensation. Secondly, and this is

more in our regular flavor of things, was a quote from a recent Entertainment

Weekly that was printed around the time the band released its new album,

called Tonight , which read in part, "...Silk's third album is pure sonic

Viagra -- its insistent, knocking beat could coax even the most timid

wallflower to get buck wild on the dance floor." That's pretty coercive music,

if you ask me.

Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road, but not driving while

listening to such persuasive music.
