Canine Advocates Fundraiser Beckons To Children

Children can look forward to face painting, air-brushed T-shirts, a bouncy house, and trucks, trucks, trucks at the Keep On Truckinâ With Canine Advocates fundraiser for a new dog pound on August 5.
From noon to 5 pm on the campus of Fairfield Hills, children and families can enjoy the main attractions of police cars, fire trucks, an ambulance, a Newtown Underwater Search and Rescue (NUSAR) vehicle, dump trucks, army trucks, tractors, and more.
Anticipating the eager rush for children to get an up-close look at the different vehicles, Animal Control Officer Carolee Mason said, âItâs exciting for the little kids.â When she first mentioned the idea to Canine Advocates of Newtown (CAN) President Virginia Jess, Ms Mason said, âI have seen it before and thought we could do this family activity outside and have a type of fair for the kids.â She also hopes it will help children learn about dogs.
Although the event is for children, it is still a fundraiser. âI wanted to do something for the little kids who do things for us all the time,â said Ms Jess. âThis is something for them.â Naming previous events such as tag sales and wine tastings, Ms Jess explained, âWe havenât done anything geared toward them. No fundraiser was kid-oriented, but this one really is.â Admission for adults is $5 and children are $3.
Ms Jess hopes to show the children her appreciation for the many times a child has asked for donations to the pound rather than birthday gifts, donated proceeds from a lemonade stand, stood outside collecting for the new pound, and more.
The dayâs events will also include a police crime prevention and safety booth, an information table on child identification program, a demonstration by Newtown K-9 dog Baro, Joanna Hehirâs Service Dogs, Lucy and Gandollff (3 to 5 pm), air brushing by Robert Lee Harris, massage therapy and reiki by Ellen Adriani, photography by Michelle Belknap and John Tucci, face painting by Sally Lynn MacDonald, military style ID dog tags for a pet or child, and an inflatable bouncing station.
All proceeds benefit the Canine Advocate Building Fund for a new pound for Newtown. Contact Ms Jess at 426-5327 or visit CanineAdvocates.org for more information.
