Republicans Set Their Slate For '95 Election
B Y K AAREN V ALENTA
Promising to go into this year's election campaign with a united party, the
Republican caucus Tuesday night elected an unchallenged slate of candidates
topped by First Selectman Bob Cascella and his running mate, James Mooney.
At the meeting Mr Cascella introduced his wife, the former Sue Gay. The couple
was married Saturday in a small, private ceremony in the first selectman's
office at Edmond Town Hall.
The approval of a Cascella/Mooney ticket was expected since the first
selectman last week announced his choice of the retired state police captain
to replace Republican Selectman James Smith, who opted not to run again.
Unlike the last election, when the GOP put up three candidates for two
Republican seats on the Board of Education, this time only two incumbents
Susan Hills and Charles Nanavaty will run. Mr Nanavaty joined the board last
year as a replacement for former board member Jack Lynch who resigned.
On the 12-member Legislative Council, where Republicans hold a 3-1 majority in
each of the three districts, three Republicans chose not to run for
re-election; Michael Marusa in District I and Jack Ryan and Marion Stalk in
District III.
In District I, the caucus chose William Brimmer to join incumbent councilmen
Joseph Mahoney and Pierre Rochman on the ballot.
Gail Halapin of and John Kortze of Homer Clark Lane will run in District III
with incumbent Joseph McGowan.
Incumbent council members Winthrop Ballard, Karen Blawie and Joe Borst will
all run for reelection in District II.
Dick Sturdevant, chairman of the Police Commission, who has been on the board
for five years, opted not to run for reelection. Running with incumbent
William Meyer will be newcomer James Reilly, a retired state police
lieutenant.
Cindy Curtis will run for her fifth two-year term as town clerk.
Incumbent Eleanor Mayer will run for a four-year term on the Board of Tax
Review.
John DeFilippe Jr, Stephen Adams and Todd Richardson will run for four-year
terms on the Planning & Zoning Commission. Mr DeFilippe and Mr Adams are
incumbents. Mr Richardson, formerly an alternate, will be the Republican
candidate in place of Victor Roy, who opted not to run again. Thomas Paisley
and Patricia Linnell will run for P&Z alternates.
Charles E. Annett III and Richard H. Kessler will run for re-election to
four-year terms on the Zoning Board of Appeals. Pat Rosato and Timothy Cronin
will run as the P&Z alternates.
John Dudley will run for another six-year term on the Board of Managers of
Edmond Town Hall.
