This week in 1991
The Newtown Babe Ruth Prep Division All-Star team scored eight runs in the
fourth inning behind three walks and hits by Rich Rekos, Don Seeley, Paul
Drap, and Mike Finney, and a three-run double by Matt Zavatsky as they rallied
to defeat Bethel 14-7 in the District 4 Championship game. Bethel had taken a
7-3 lead through two innings before the Newtown rally. Chris Hayward pitched
the last four innings, shutting Bethel out on only two hits. Rekos and
Zavatsky each had three hits in the game for Newtown, while Hayward, Finney,
and Mike Lancaster all added two.
This week in 1986
Newtown's Kip Bowers, 28, shot a 5-under-par 63 to win his semifinal matchup
against Walt Gebert and then went on to defeat Bob Melvin 3-and-2 in the
36-hole final round to earn his fourth Newtown Country Club Men's Club
Championship title. During early-round action, Bowers shot the first
hole-in-one of his career with a 3-iron on the par-4 fourth hole. Bowers had
also won NCC club championships in 1979, 83, and 84.
This week in 1981
Rob Constant slammed a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh
inning lifting the Newtown Little League's Majors Division All-Stars to a 3-2
win over Wolcott in the championship game of the New Milford Invitational
Tournament. The Newtown team, coached by Ray Craven, won six-straight games to
capture the tournament crown behind the high-powered bats of Dave Barrows,
Reilly Walker, Kris Svensson, and Constant.
This week in 1976
Richie Cavanaugh blasted a two-run homer in the first inning that travelled
the length of two ballfields and Steve Kordish pitched a masterpiece as the
Newtown Little League's Seniors Division All-Stars defeated Bridgeport North
End, 5-3 in the District Tournament opener. Other Newtown All-Star included
Tom and Steve Paoletti, Mike Eisenbach, Happy Costa, Rusty Williams, Chuck
Guck, Mike Wlasuk, Gary Andrews, Mike Basso, George Oberstadt, Larry Stevens,
Ed Marks, and Barry Falconer.
This week in 1971
A new course record was set at Newtown Country Club when Mike Hoitko, many
times the men's club champion there, toured the 18 holes in a par-shattering
63 strokes. On the following day, Hoitko shot 65.
This week in 1966
The Newtown Little League's Seniors Division All-Stars were selected and will
begin play this week against Norwich. The team, coached by Henry Jacoby and
James Osborne, consists of; Mike Hoffman, Bob Saren, Jeff Robertson, Andy
Treffs, Mike Osborne, Dave Bennett, Ed Hogenauer, Mike Grubisa, Marc Lory,
Chris Leise, Dave Kayfus, Bill Schierloh, Ed Sullivan, Mark Reilly, and Ed
Walker.
