Student Scholarships Available At NHS

The following Scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Applications and/or more information for these scholarships, as well as ones previously listed in The Bee, are available there. Please call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 if you have any questions.

Chevrolet/Michelle Kwan REWARDS Scholarship Program – This scholarship has been established to annually recognize 10 outstanding female high school graduates from across the United States who are involved in athletics. Each scholarship provides a $5,000 award payable over four years; $2,000 for the freshman year and $1,000 per year for up to three additional years. To be eligible, a female student must: 1) be currently completing her senior year, 2) possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale, 3) have demonstrated both academic and athletic excellence through school teams, intramural activities, organized athletic clubs, or other community-based sports organizations, 4) have demonstrated leadership and community involvement /volunteerism, 5) be a citizen or legal resident of the US, 6) continued involvement in athletics while in college, and 7) demonstrate financial need. Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarships – Sponsored by the Elks National Foundation for any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States. Applicants will be judged on financial need, leadership, and scholarship. The Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated boys and girls in the 2001 competition. Applicants must advance through local, district, and state competition to reach the national competition. Applications must be filed no later than January 12, 2001. Embark.com Scholarships – Go online and check out the Embark.com Web site and enter to have a chance to win $40,000 for college tuition. All you have to do is enter the Embark.com Tuition Sweepstakes by February 1, 2001.

The Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel 2001 – For current high school JUNIORS who have a Jewish background. This is an all expense paid, five-week program of study, dialogue, and travel in Israel beginning July 2, 2001. Twenty-six outstanding Jewish teenagers from the United States and Canada will be chosen. They are seeking the most promising young people, coming from a wide variety of Jewish backgrounds. The objective of the program is to foster a sense of community among a diverse group of potential Jewish leaders. Selection will be based on merit alone (not on need). UNIPAC’s attheu.com Scholarships – UNIPAC, a leading student loan service supporting the needs of schools, borrowers, and financial institutions across the nation, is excited to feature 50 $1,000 scholarships offered by ASAP/Union Bank & Trust. These scholarships are open to any high school senior who plans on attending college or university in the 2001-2002 school year. Go to www.attheu.com and click on “scholarship search,” which is located in the financial aid office section. Applications must be completed before February 1, 2001. Students who do not have access to a computer may use the computers located in the Career Center.
