Scouts Wrote To Troops On Postcards Made From Recycled Materials

STRATFORD — More than 60 scouts from five communities, including Beacon Falls, Hamden, Newtown, Shelton, and Stamford, participated in the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority (CRRA) Garbage Museum Scout Day event on October 21.

The Boy and Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Brownies wrote thank-you notes to the troops on postcards made from recycled paper. The postcards will be mailed to the troops through the Family Program of the Connecticut National Guard in Hartford.

Troop 4078 of Newtown thanked the troops for “risking their lives to save us from the terrorists.” Troop 918 hoped the “troops were safe” and Tyler Werner from Pack 25 of Shelton said that without the troops, “our country would be history.”

Scouts also participated in tours of the museum, explored exhibits, and caught a bird’s-eye view of the CRRA container recycling facility. An additional Scouts Day will be offered on Saturday, January 6; group leaders can to contact the museum for information about participating.

The Garbage Museum features Trash-o-saurus, a one-ton dinosaur made from salvaged items. Visitors may take part in scavenger hunts searching for “found” treasures on Trash-o-saurus.

The Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority is a quasi-public agency whose mission is to work for — and in — the best interests of the municipalities of the state of Connecticut. CRRA’s new board of directors and new management team develop and implement environmentally sound solutions and best practices for solid waste disposal and recycling management on behalf of municipalities.

CRRA also runs environmental and recycling educational programs through its Visitors Center in Hartford and Garbage Museum in Stratford. For more information about CRRA and its activities, visit CRRA.org.

The Garbage Museum is at 1410 Honeyspot Road Extension. For more information or directions, call 203-381-9571 or go to the website and click on Education.
