177 Voters Beat The Registration Deadline
Tuesday was the final day to register to vote in this year's election, so not
surprisingly, the last minute registrants came out in droves.
According to Linda Connor, a 22-year clerk in the office of the Registrar of
Voters, 177 residents came out to get their name on the voters list that day.
"Now it's catch up time for us," she explained Wednesday. "We have just two
weeks to prepare a voters list."
Of course, this is no ordinary election year. Because it's a presidential
election, everyone wants a shot at pulling the lever in the booth.
"They want to vote for the president no matter what," said Town Clerk Cindy
Curtis Simon. "Every four years they come out to register."
Getting on the voting list is much easier these days; residents can now
register to vote by mail. Registration clerk Karin Aurelia said the office has
received about 40-50 mail-in registrations a day the past two weeks.
Newtown has a reputation for getting a large voter turnout at election time,
according to Mrs Connor, who said the town reportedly has one of the highest
presidential election turnout ratios in the nation.
In the 1992 Bush vs Clinton election, 11,499 of the town's 12,633 (91 percent)
registered voters turned out.
