Gateway's Sets Record With CT Critics Circle Awards
NEW FAIRFIELD - The Connecticut Critics Circle recently announced the
recipient of its prestigious awards for excellence for the 1996 season. In the
Best Musical category, Gateway's Candlewood Playhouse in New Fairfield all but
swept the category, setting a CCC record in the process.
The Circle applauded Gateway's offerings, with a grand total of seven
nominations on the theatre, currently in its 31st season.
Tommy , a rock musical featured last fall, won every category from Outstanding
Musical to Best Actor In A Musical (Charles Dillon) and Best Director (Dom
Ruggiero). This was the second time the Circle saw fit to recognize Mr
Ruggiero's work at Gateway's. He was applauded in the past for his helming of
The Phantom of the Opera .
Additional Tommy winners included Michael Boyer for set design, Chris J. Landy
for lighting design, and Mark Clark and Simon Matthews for sound design.
The Critics Circle also recognized Mitzi Hamilton and Bob Durkin for their
fancy footwork in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers , presenting the two with
awards for Outstanding Choreography.
