*Non-Fiction Book Discussion: The Non-Fiction Book Group will discuss Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know About the Emerging Science of Sex Differences by Leonard Sax on Tuesday, May 1, at 1 pm. Newcomers are welcome.
Pediatrician and psychologist Sax argues that our theories about genderâs fluidity may be wrong and to apply them to children in their formative years is quite dangerous. Mr Sax believes the brains of boys and girls are hardwired differently: boys are more aggressive, girls are more shy. Mr Sax also believes modern gender philosophy has resulted in more boys being given behavior-modifying drugs and more girls being given antidepressants.
*Independent Film Series: On Tuesday, May 1, at 7:30 pm, the Independent Film Series will offer a screening of Be With Me.
This film is a tapestry of three stories woven around the themes of love, hope, tragedy and redemption. Although the main characters come from different backgrounds and lead different lives, they are bound by one common desire- to be with their loved one. Unbeknownst to them, these different souls will share the same stage in a play written by fate.
*Author Talk â A Beautiful Blend of Romance and History: On Thursday, May 3, at 7:30 pm, author Linda Cardillo will speak about her recent novel, Dancing on Sunday Afternoons.
Ms Cardillo received an unexpected gift of love letters left to her by her formidable grandmother, Giulia Fiorillo. These letters became the seeds from which Dancing on Sunday Afternoons emerged. John Charles of The Chicago Tribune called the book âa superbly nuanced, emotionally rich tale of one womanâs journey from turn-of-the-century Italy to America in which Linda Cardillo beautifully blends womenâs fiction, romance, and historical fiction into one unforgettable story.â
