Hollandia Spring Show This Weekend

BETHEL — Hollandia Nurseries will host a huge two-day Spring Flower Show this weekend, with events taking place at both of its locations — the nurseries at 103 Old Hawleyville Road and the gift and garden center at 95 Stony Hill Road.

The show will run from 8 am until 6 pm each day. There will be dozens of seminars (see schedule below) including special appearances by Ralph Snodsmith and Sydney Eddison, along with dozens of manufacturer representatives on-site, garden tours, refreshments, and fun for all ages.

Hollandia staff will offer guided tours of the nursery from noon to 1 and 3 to 4 on Saturday, and at 10:30 am and 3 pm on Sunday.

One-hour classes will be offered at both locations all weekend. All classes require a reservation and a $5 registration fee (attendees can receive a refund, however, with a $5 voucher toward any purchase available at both Hollandia locations). Call 743-0267 to register.

On Saturday, classes at the nursery will include the following: “Rose Growing Made Easy,” with Jerry Amoroso of Week’s Roses, at 9 am; “Native Plant Landscaping with American Beauties” by Mark Sellew, also at 9 am; “Exploring the Garden Palette with Sydney Eddison,” led by the Newtown author and gardener, 10:30 am; “A Tisket, A Tasket, Fix My Garden Basket” by Dr Cari Peters of JR Peters, who will share tricks of founder Jack Peters to keep garden basket containers colorful and blooming all season long, at noon; “A–Z Gardening” open forum, led by Garden Hotline radio host Ralph Snodsmith, 1:30; “New Varieties and Colors for 2007 Container Gardening,” with author and lecturer Carol Huntington, 3 pm; and “Landscape Design with Color and Texture” by members of Hollandia’s staff, at 4 pm.

Classes at Hollandia Gift & Garden on Saturday are as follows: “New Pest and Disease Controls” by Eugene Reelick of Hollandia, who will discuss the benefits of Bayer products for home and garden needs, at 9 am; “Garden Ponds Filtration & Maintenance” by Donald Schnoor of Cyprio USA, LLC, at 10:30; “Stonewall Construction,” with Hollandia staff offering information on the best materials and designs for landscapes, also at 10:30; “Protect Your Investment from Deer” by James Messina of Messina Wildlife, at noon; “How To Spike Up Your Old Orchid: Orchids 101” by Julia Massolin-Walas, president of Connecticut Orchid Society, also at noon; “Bonsai Design” by Teddi Scobi, co-owner of New England Bonsai Gardens, at 1:30; “Lawns and Garden Rejuvenation” by Anthony Langlois of Jonathan Green, at 3 pm; and “The Benefits of Compost in Potting Soil” by Frank Doherty of Long Island Compost, at 4.

The schedule for Sunday at the nursery location will open with another offering of “The Art of Landscape Edging & Pruning” by Hollandia staff at 9 am (see details under Saturday’s listing); “The Beauty of Roses” by Dan Moore of Prides Corner Farms, who will provide a growing guide and upkeep information for rose beds, at 10:30; Carol Huntington will give a second offering of “Explore New Varieties” (see Saturday’s details) at noon; Hollandia staff will present “Perennial Spring Clean-Up and Division” at 12:30; professional photographer Wally Kolek will present “Digital Floral Photography: See What I See,” info and digital images of architecture, flowers, lighthouses, and landscapes, at 1:30; Hollandia staff will offer “Container Gardening for 2007” at 3 pm; and John Casertano, the owner of Casertano Perennial Farm, will lead “Perennial Planting” at 4 pm.

At Hollandia Gift & Garden on Sunday, classes will begin at 9 am with “Spring Maintenance and Pond Opening and Pond Plants” with Kyle Roller and Rob Dietter at 9 am; “Protect Your Investment from Deer” at 10:30; “Lawn and Garden Rejuvenation” by Anthony Langlois, of Jonathan Green, at noon; Hollandia staff will again offer “Stonewall Construction,” also at noon; Frank Doughty will present another “Benefits of Compost in Potting Soil” at 1:30; “House Plant Transplanting,” tricks for easy transplanting to allow plants to grow, will be at 3; and Eugene Reelick will offer another “New Pest and Disease Controls” class at 4.
