Bio Bus Schedules A Stop At St Rose

Connecticut’s Bio Bus will, a 40-foot-long learning center that provides students with hands-on experience in the life sciences, will be visiting St Rose School October 23–24.

Students will be introduced to modern biotechnology and forensic techniques that are used to separate and purify molecules based on size and change. This process can be applied to determine the authenticity of a painting. Other students will be introduced to Sickle Cell Anemia, a genetically inherited disease, and will learn how gel electrophoresis is used as a test for the trait. The experiment enables students to learn about the Human Genome Project and the role it plays in diagnosis and therapy of genetically inherited illnesses.

Since its inception in 2001, the Bio Bus has visited 130 schools, teaching 13,297 students during two-hour hands-on laboratory sessions. The Bio Bus has also conducted nearly 100 community and sponsored events attended by thousands. The bus represents a five-year, $3.6 million partnership between 27 members of Connecticut United for Research Excellence, Incorporated, Connecticut’s Bio Science Cluster, and Connecticut Innovations. Connecticut Innovations is the state’s leading investor in high technology.
