Guide, DVD Exploring Careers In Health, Biosciences
HARTFORD â New England has the greatest concentration of health care industries in the country, with Connecticut ranking fifth in the nation in total health care employment concentration. The stateâs technology and science industries are expected to expand in the future, creating more jobs in health, biotechnology, nursing, pharmaceutical, and other fields that already face severe workforce shortages.
To help fill that need, the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA), in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Education, has released a teacherâs guide and DVD to promote rewarding careers in health and biosciences. Career Pathways: Health and Biosciences builds student interest in these fields, expands their knowledge of educational requirements and career opportunities, and illustrates how these careers transform and enrich the way people live.
Designed to be used in middle schools and high schools, the kit provides information on health and biosciences specialties, salary ranges, and programs in Connecticut education institutions, as well as work-based lessons for students. It is the second in a series centered on high-growth careers; the first focused on engineering.
The DVD profiles young Connecticut professionals in a variety of careers, including X-ray technology, bioscience, psychiatric research, nursing, occupational therapy, and forensic science. It details the skills and attributes employers are looking for in todayâs global economy.
âAs the health and biosciences industries continue to grow and expand, they will seek talented young professionals to help them advance,â said Lauren Weisberg Kaufman, CBIA vice president for education and job training and executive director of the associationâs Education Foundation. âWith the population aging, demands for health management products and services will create even greater need for workers in the areas of nursing and bioscience, which are already facing critical shortages. The guide and DVD can play a pivotal role in helping students see potential career paths available to them in these exciting and growing industries.â
The teacherâs guide and DVD were distributed to middle and high schools across the state. The kit can be downloaded at www.cbia.com.
