Learning Spanish The Delicious Way

(with cut)

BY MICHELE HOGAN

Learning Spanish has never been so tasty, as it was in Jeanne Schneider's

seventh grade class at Newtown Middle School.

Megan Kelly rattled off Spanish food names as if she had been raised on them:

aceitunas (olives), cacahetes (nuts), queso (cheese), refresco (soda).

"We learned about Spanish foods when we made up skits in Spanish," Megan

explained.

She continued, "We were learning how to introduce people and order in a

restaurant, and just for fun, I added ` tango que trabahar' I have to go to

work -- in the restaurant!"

Mrs Schneider said that before the students prepared the food for their

restaurant, they had to prepare a menu, applying their knowledge of Spanish

culture, language and currency.

Megan said that pricing was the hardest part. She said, "I knew that there are

about 130 ptas to one American dollar, but when I worked out the menu for

drinks, personally I thought the prices were high, so I priced mine down a

bit."
