Newtowner Named To
Regional Womenâs Center Board
Barbara Cottingham of Newtown was recently elected to a three-year term on the Womenâs Center of Greater Danburyâs Board of Directors.
Last year, more than 19,000 individuals from the Womenâs Centerâs 13 area communities were the recipients of free and confidential services provided through the centerâs domestic violence, sexual assault and resource services programs, as well as its comprehensive community education, training and primary prevention programs.
Specially certified direct service staff and volunteers continue to provide critical intervention, support, and counseling to adults and children both in person and via our hotlines.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Ms Cottingham has lived in Newtown since 1986. She is a longstanding member of the New York Graphic Artistâs Guild who currently owns an illustration and design business, working for many prominent corporations.
Among other Fairfield County volunteer affiliations, Ms Cottingham has taught ESL with Literacy Volunteers of Danbury, assisted the elderly through the Friendly Visitors of Newtown program, and donated her time and talent to Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut. She is married, with three grown children.
Ms Cottingham said she joined the board because she is passionate about womenâs and childrenâs issues and the fundamental need for safe environments.
The Womenâs Center of Greater Danbury provides free and confidential services to prevent or lessen the trauma associated with domestic violence, sexual assault, and other major life transitions to thousands of women, children, and men annually. The programs of the Womenâs Center are supported by state and local government, area United Way agencies and the people and businesses in the communities we serve including Newtown and 13 other communities in the western Connecticut region.
