Newtown Middle School Named "School Of The Year"

BY MICHELE HOGAN

For the first time ever, Newtown Middle School entered a statewide middle

school of the year contest, and they won.

While Newtown Middle School students, teachers, administrators and parents

were out on the lawn in front of the school, being honored for annual awards,

the phone was ringing in Principal Les Weintraub's office.

It was Friday May 29, late morning, when Mr Weintraub returned to his office

to find that Timothy Doyle of the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) had

called.

Anxiously, he picked up the phone and called him back. The first thing Mr

Doyle said was "congratulations!"

Later, recalling the conversation, Mr Weintraub said "My jaw dropped. I was

just so elated!"

He found out that Newtown Middle School was one of two schools chosen from

across the state for the CAS Middle Level School of the Year 1997-98.

One-hundred-and-forty-two Connecticut middle schools had been sent the

application form in March, yet only 12 proud schools took the time to enter

the contest.

Mr Weintraub said "you know, it's the kids' award, the teachers' award, the

parents' award. It's an award for everybody. I went straight to the PA system

and made the announcement, then I heard the `Hurrahs!' all the way through the

hallways!"

Cathy Cincogrono, reading teacher, who had completed the application form with

colleague Nancy Martin and Vice Principal Virginia King, said she felt "there

was not a doubt that we wouldn't win this."

Dr King interjected, "The school is so open to educational innovation. We aim

for continuous improvement. We've never said `we're done.'"

Mr Weintraub said that when CAS asked to visit the school and interview six

teachers, six parents and six students, he went down the list and said "yes,

yes, yes." Finally he had to use a lottery system to select the people to

represent the school.

Timothy Doyle, assistant executive director of CAS, said that the winning

school was selected by applying criteria developed by the Newtown Middle

School Association and the Carnegie Foundation.

He said "Newtown Middle School did a really nice job. It's an outstanding

school."
