Connecticut’s Role In Civil War

MONROE — Sharon B. Smith, the author of Connecticut’s Civil War: A Guide for Travelers, will be speaking in Monroe at the East Village Meetinghouse, at the corner of East Village and Barn Hill Roads, on Saturday, April 17, at 2 pm. Her appearance is being sponsored by Monroe Historical Society.

Ms Smith will talk about Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, Connecticut natives and residents John Brown and Harriet Beecher Stowe, and the Prudence Crandall and Amistad cases. She will also talk about Connecticut’s enormous production of weapons and other items used in the war and touch on some of the heroes, as well as opposition to the Union effort within Connecticut.
