NVCC To Offer Nursing Re-Entry Courses

WATERBURY — As nurses retire, health care needs continue to grow. And as baby boomers become older and the elderly live longer, it is estimated that there will be a major nursing shortage by the year 2005. For those contemplating a return to nursing after a hiatus or presently working and interested in changing their job focus, Naugatuck Valley Community College offers a credit-free Nurse Re-entry (Refresher) course this fall.

The course will include classroom learning, skills laboratory, and clinical experience in acute care, nursing homes, and home care settings. Students will receive an update in the nursing care of adults with medical-surgical conditions, including current methods of treatment, nursing processes, the implications for nursing care, and follow-up.

Trends in health care, evolving roles, the current scope of the nursing practice, legal-ethical issues, and the role of technology will be covered. Nurse clinical specialists will share their expertise in several specialty areas, adding to the class content. This daytime course will award 216 contact hours.

Also offered this fall are two one-session forums that will focus on changing roles for nurses and educational opportunities in Connecticut. In the changing roles forum, participants will have an opportunity to hear from nurses in different settings, including occupational health, corrections nursing, developmental disability nursing, and advanced practice. Three contact hours will be awarded.

The educational opportunities and credentialing for nurses forum will be of help to anyone who wants to continue their nursing education. It offers nurses a chance to meet with their peers, representatives from Connecticut colleges that offer nursing graduate and undergraduate courses, and nursing specialty organizations; all have information to share. Two and one half contact hours will be awarded.

For more information on these courses, call 203/575-8030.
