It Is Not The Time For Half Steps
It Is Not The Time For Half Steps
To the Editor:
After reading âNew Advocacy Group Sparks Debate and Criticism,â I feel compelled to respond. First, I applaud Ms Murray and Mr Davis for forming WECAN. They have taken the time to educate themselves about a very important issue facing our town and have taken a stand. Second, I commend our elected officials for doing their best to lead Newtown when so many factors must be considered and so many important decisions made.
At the same time, I believe whether WECAN or any other group represents one person or 100,000, it should be heard and its suggestions seriously considered. For those who disagree, the onus unfortunately is on them to have their voice heard. However, for disagreement to be productive, it should come with proposed solutions. As a town, we should not be wasting time nitpicking at each other when serious decisions must be made and made now.
We are all aware population growth in Newtown has increased significantly. Our high school is overcrowded. Our town offices need expansion. As there is no likelihood population will decrease in the future, we must make a big decision. My proposal is not a new one: build a new high school at Fairfield Hills. Move the middle school to the current high school. Move the town hall to the current middle school. Taking half-steps now will only defer the problem not solve it.
Letâs do now what we always do as parents and adults, sacrifice for the betterment of our children. Do we want to be remembered for building a new town hall while cobbling together a temporary solution for our burgeoning student population? Or will we be remembered for building a high school with an eye toward the future while reusing buildings in place for school and municipal use? I donât believe I have all the answers, but I have some sound ideas. And I am certain we are responsible for the legacy we leave our children and our environment.
Thank you for your thoughtful attention.
