Glorydays - December 29, 1995

This week in 1990

Lynn Lattanzio scored 12 points and Val McKenzie added seven, but the Newtown

High girls' basketball team comitted 37 turnovers and lost 49-31 to defending

WCC and Class M champion, Masuk. NHS freshman Sarah Wasko, playing for senior

point guard Nadine Henchcliffe who had injured her ankle early in the contest,

scored five points including a three-point field goal.

This week in 1985

John Kotch (16 points), Matt Sandone (16), Brian Strom (14), Mike Sullivan

(14), and Hugh Jones (10) were the high scorers for their respective teams as

the Newtown Parks and Recreation Basketball League got underway with its first

week of action.

This week in 1980

Mark Langmead totalled 40 points and Spencer McLung rang up 31 as the Newtown

High boys' freshman basketball team opened its new season by winning two of

its first three. Other members of the NHS freshman team included Tom Arnold,

Rick Daniels, Rick Manzo, Jim Whelan, Chip Clark, John Grimardi, Chris

Eitapence, Chris Mars, Bill Wyslick, and Dave Riebe.

This week in 1975

Newtown High grad Barry Fowler, playing as a freshman, helped the Nichols

College football team to a third-consecutive New England Football Conference

title. Wearing number-56, Fowler started at left offensive guard for the

Bisons.

This week in 1970

The third snow storm of the new winter season cancelled all sporting events on

the slate for the week. The town was hit by eight inches of snow on Saturday

and, after digging out, got another five inches on Tuesday.

This week in 1965

Tim Powell, home on leave from the US Military, moved the ball at the point

and guided the Big SAC's basketball team to an 80-43 win over Southbury AC.

Jack Qubick and Ron Bearsley both scored in double figures for the winners.

This week in 1960

The Newtown Class C " bird smashers " defeated the Milford Class C Badminton

Club 7-2 on the high school courts for their second-consecutive victory.

Playing for Newtown were Penny Sheldon, Fred Schemp, Shirley Revet, Louise

Shortt, Mauriel Noonan, Dick Kennett, Ben Shortt, James Noonan, and August

Mackro.

This week in 1955

On what was called a " freak shot " Newtown High's Paul Lockwood sunk a shot

in the wrong basket and the NHS jayvee boys' basketball team lost 46-44 to

Ridgefield. Ed Presnell scored 13 points to lead the Newtown jayvees and Fred

Terrill added eleven. Lockwood finished the game with eight points, six of

them for Newtown.
