Panel Appointed To Review Stevenson Dam Plans
During its October 23 meeting, the Board of Seletmen appointed an ad hoc
committee to act as liaison between the state and town to help determine the
impact of the the Stevenson Dam project on the region.
"I understand that the state has got to maintain and repair the bridge, but I
don't think they need to put in [a new span]," which is one of the plans under
consideration, according to First Selectman Bob Cascella.
"My original concerns continue - how will this impact the environment and
traffic? If they rebuild a bridge down there, traffic will increase. It
wouldn't be good for Newtown or for the whole region from an environmental
perspective... What might be more feasible is to put in a bigger turning
radius for safety and traffic patterns."
The committee is comprised of six Newtown residents: Tara Bennett, Judd Doyle,
Stan Karpacz, Don MacKenzie, Gary Gilroy, and Jim Sphunt.
The "non-political" group will work closely with representatives from Oxford
and Monroe, the other two towns directly affected, said Mr Cascella.
