5th Graders Go To High School!
5th Graders Go To High School!
By Christina LaValla
On Thursday, March 1, a group of fifth graders from Hawley Elementary School went to High School!
Why? For a Peer Mentor TV show recording for channel 17. Channel 17 is our local access cable station.
The peer mentor group is a group of fifth grade students who help younger children who have a bit of difficulty cooperating with others in their school surroundings.Â
The peer mentor group consisted of Tyler Adams, Kimberly Andrews, Jacob Burg, Christina LaValla, Chelsea Liker, Lucy Remitz, Chris Schreiber, and Jacqueline VanWaalwijik. Mrs Pesce, the lead teacher at Hawley Elementary, and Mr Brumley, the school psychologist, were the coordinators for the Peer mentor group. They each spoke briefly about what peer mentoring is and how the program at Hawley works.Â
For the show there were two panels. Four students were on each panel, one student acting as the interviewer and the other three answering the questions. The peer mentors thought up the questions at a group meeting.Â
The questions were basically about the mentorsâ role models, their thoughts on homework, moving up to Middle School and other Hawley School likes and dislikes.Â
They all took turns giving their answers. We learned that it takes a lot of work and a lot of people to produce a half-hour TV show. Everyone said they had an exciting time.
