POSITIVE PARENTING workshops can be hosted in your school, business, or home! We are presently setting up the Fall schedule so now is the time to inquire. Please call NYS for more information

NYS Summer Programs

NYS is set to launch FIVE new programs and bring back, by popular demand, TWO favorites:

(NEW)

“SPORTS FUN +”

(A FEW SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE) The week of June 19-23, explore a different sport each session (soccer, basketball, flag football, kayak racing, crazy water and field sports, swimming, and more.) Time: 6-7:30 pm, Dickenson Park. Fee: $35 for all five sessions. Limit: 12. Open to all students entering grades 6-8.

“SUPER SITTERS BABYSITTING COURSE – 5 SESSIONS IN 5 DAYS!”

FIRST SESSION FULL

There are four openings in the second session offered the week of June 19. This session runs from 3 to 4:30 pm. We will meet every afternoon for five days. Snacks are provided. Fee is $25.

(RETURNING)

“NATURE DETECTIVES” and “THE GREAT OUTDOORS” (FILLING UP QUICKLY) nature programs at Cullens Memorial, June 26-30. For children entering grades K-2 (9-10:30 am) and 3-5 (10:45-12:15 pm). This year’s program will focus on Life Cycles (water, seeds, animals, and more!). Fee: $25 for the week.

“OUTDOOR CHALLENGE – DAY HIKE”

(TWO SPACES LEFT)

Wednesday, June 28, from 9 am to 6 pm, come take a day hike in Cornwall, Conn. Have fun outdoors. Learn, or practice, different skills and techniques involved for a successful hike. You’ll prepare dinner (it’s amazing what you can do without a microwave!) and solve various challenges you may encounter as you progress through the day.

Fee is $10 per person (includes food and transportation).

Space is limited. Open to students entering 6-12 grade.

“LEARNING TO GROW”

The Youth Garden is a work in progress. Looking for middle and high school age youth to volunteer several hours a week. Varieties of flowers and vegetables are/will be planted and cared for. Please call the office for further information.

MENTORSHIP

Are you interested in becoming a certified mentor? NYS will work around your summer schedule. We welcome all high school students and adults who would like to give some of their time to help someone.

THINGS I WISH I HAD KNOWN BEFORE I WENT TO COLLEGE

If you are a college-bound senior and have questions on just what college life is really like join present college students on five Wednesday nights beginning July 5 at 7 pm. discussions will explore various aspects of college life, such as adjusting to the diversity of a college campus, substance and sexual abuse, stress, time and money management, etc. College students will answer questions honestly and provide an insight into just what is myth and what is reality on today’s campuses.

In order for the students to gather as much information as possible, this workshop is for STUDENTS ONLY.

Job Bank

School is out and summer is here. Now is a great time to register with the Job Bank. New jobs are called in daily. So, if you are looking for a part-time or full-time job, NYS may be able to assist you in your search. The NYS Job Bank is open to students 13 to 17. Application forms are available at the office. Please call Jessica Clark, Job Bank Coordinator, at 270-4335 for further information.

Youth Group Meetings:

The High School Youth Advisory Board (HS YAB) and the Middle School Youth Advisory Board (MS YAB) have finished their meetings for the year.

If you are interested in joining one of these groups please call the NYS office. New members are always welcome!

NYCAAP – Meeting times will vary. Please call the office for dates and times.

All programs will take place at Newtown Youth Services, 41-A Main Street (next to Town Hall), unless noted. For further information on any of the above programs, please call Newtown Youth Services at 270-4335.
