Pair Of Printmakers
At SCAN Program
The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) have invited two printmakers to talk about their work at the next meeting of SCAN â planned for Wednesday, July 27, at 1:30 pm.
This meeting is open to the public and will be in the lower meeting room at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street in Newtown.
Karen Whitman and Richard Pantell, printmakers from Woodstock, N.Y., will present a talk about the history and basics of printmaking. They will explore how the major categories â intaglio relief and lithography â are distinguished from one another and the presses used for each, what a limited edition print is, and how to distinguish a hand-pulled print from a commercial reproduction.
Mr Pantell, a printmaking instructor at Art Students League of New York City and whose primary medium is etching, will show tools of etching including copper plates and etching needles, and will show âstate proofsâ of an etching in progress.
The couple met 13 years ago in Woodstock, New York. After showing each other their etchings they could see in a graphic way that they were soulmates. Both of their imagery is primarily of the city and its people.
Ms Whitman and Mr Pantell are both award-winning printmakers whose work has been featured in American Artist Magazine. Their work is in numerous museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Museum of the City of New York and the British Museum in London. They are listed in Whose Who in American Art.
