Newtown High School Lax Girls Suffer First Loss
Newtown High School Lax Girls Suffer First Loss
By Kim J. Harmon
The dream season â which came with prominent rankings in Connecticut and New England â finally got a little bit of a blemish when the Newtown High School girlsâ lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season.
The Lady Nighthawks were 11-1 following a 12-11 loss to New Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon. It was the second Newtown team to lose its unbeaten status in the last two weeks.
Girlsâ tennis had that status challenged on Wednesday (after press time) against Joel Barlow and the girlsâ track team will have its status challenged next week against Weston.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Newtown 17, New Milford 3; New Fairfield 12, Newtown 11
It was an eye opener, alright.
After soaring through its first 11 games, scoring more than 170 goals and beating some of the best teams in the state along the way, the Newtown High School girlsâ lacrosse team got a bit of awake up call on Tuesday night in New Fairfield.
Despite a strong five-goal effort from Rachel Maley, the Lady Nighthawks suffered their first loss of the season, a 12-11 decision to the Lady Rebels. While the âHawks dropped to 11-1, the Rebels improved to 9-2 and illustrated how tight the competition may be at the top of the SWC.
âWe played well,â head coach Maura Fletcher said, âbut their transition offense was really good. They had a lot of speed and we had a lot of trouble getting possession of the ball. The girls played well, but (New Fairfield) played better.â
Stef Burra and Brie Mallon paced the Lady Rebels with four goals apiece, but Alyse Valentini â one of New Fairfieldâs top offensive threats â was limited to just one goal by the exceptional defensive work of Newtownâs Carly Curran.
Courtney Gleason and Lauren Ciccomoscolo scored two goals apiece while Karli Beitel and Jen Greenwood notched one goal apiece for the âHawks. Maura Collier chipped in with a pair of assists and Kerrie Canavan recorded 12 saves in the cage.
It doesnât get much easier for the âHawks, either. After a Thursday night contest against Pomperaug, the locals will host a solid Brookfield team next Tuesday under the lights at Blue & Gold Stadium in the next-to-last game of the regular season.
âBrookfield has a really good team, very fast and athletic,â said coach Fletcher, âand it will be a true test for us.â
The âHawks improved to 11-0 last week following a 17-3 pounding of New Milford. Katie Sudby and Ciccomoscolo scored five goals apiece as Beitel scored three goals and assisted on five others. Greenwood scored twice while Gleason and Libby Feltch scored one goal each. Greenwood, Sudby and Kim Solheim all recorded assists.

BOYS LACROSSE

Head coach Brian Micena saw the Newtown High School boysâ lacrosse team start to turn a corner in a 6-3 loss to Amity back on April 29, but that elusive third win remained just outside of their reach this past week.
Until New Fairfield came to town on Tuesday.
The Nighthawks put together superb efforts against New Milford last Thursday and Conard of West Hartford on Saturday, but suffered two-goal losses in both cases (10-8 to the Green Wave and 12-10 to the Chieftains).
But on Tuesday, a solid defensive effort carried the locals to a 7-5 win over the Rebels of New Fairfield as the âHawks improved to 3-8 overall, 3-3 in the South-West Conference. Will Mahony scored two goals while Brendan Martin, Travis Speer, Collin Babbage, Kevin Regan and Grant Speer all got into the act. Brian Reszoly notched a pair of assists as Zach Varga, Babbage and Martin all had assists.
Goaltender Drew Harmata earned the win with 12 saves in the cage.
The âHawks came close against New Milford and had a lead before the Green Wave rallied in the second half. Devon Dobson scored five times to offset a three-goal effort by Zach DâAgostino and two-goal efforts from Mahony and Grant Speer.
On Saturday, Conard took a lead and remained just out of the reach of the âHawks, who kept pressing on offense and pulling to within a couple of goals before the Cheiftains would respond. Travis Speer scored three goals while Martin and Mahony scored two goals apiece and Grant Speer notched three assists.
The locals were scheduled to visit Pomperaug on Thursday and will visit Brookfield next Tuesday before returning home next Thursday to host Notre Dame in a 4 pm contest at the DeGroat/Anderson Athletic Complex.

SOFTBALL
Newtown 18, Immaculate 2; Newtown 18, Kolbe 0; Newtown 7, New Milford 0; Newtown 5, Pomperaug 0
The pitching was sharp and the bats were hot and after four wins the Newtown High School softball team is 10-5 overall and 8-1 in the South-West Conference.
The Lady Nighthawks pummeled Immaculate (18-2) and Kolbe Cathedral (18-0) last week before earning key wins over SWC playoff contenders New Milford (7-0 on Pack The Field Night at Treadwell Park) and Pomperaug (5-0).
The offense was so hot, in fact, that it overshadowed some stunning pitching performances by Stacy Broughton and Jenna Legros. Broughton fired a two-hitter against Immaculate and a one-hitter against Pomperaug while the pair combined on a no-hitter against Kolbe-Cathedral. Meanwhile, Legros scattered five hits in a shutout of New Milford.
The win over Pomperaug was the Nighthawksâ second this season after an 11-0 shellacking back on Opening Day.
The locals collected just six hits against Kasey Foster and Rachel Zinni of Pomperaug, but four went for extra bases â two triples by Nora Lynn Shimko and Katie Schmidt (her third of the season), a double by Lisa Alberico and a homer by Sam Ciaccia.
Broughton â who improved to 6-0 on the year with a miniscule 0.56 earned run average â allowed just a second-inning single while striking out six and plunking three batters.
The âHawks broke open a 1-0 game with three runs in the top of the fourth with the help of singles by Melissa Fracker and Joanna Barry and the double by Alberico. The locals got their last run when Ciaccia off the fifth with a home run to deep centerfield.
Equally as impressive as the 7-0 win over New Milford last Friday at Treadwell Park. While enjoying the presence of many cheering Newtown Babe Ruth Softball League players, the âHawks topped a Green Wave team that had come into the game 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the SWC.
But Legros had a strong game on the rubber, striking out six batters and scattering five hits. At the plate, Ciaccia banged out three hits and drove in three runs while Lisa Alberico and Kelly Tenney chipped in with two hits apiece. Joanna Barry and Jenna Van Waalwijk both doubled.
Ciaccia and Alberico drove in three runs apiece.
Having a much easier time last week, Barry was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and five RBI while Shimko and Tenney both homered in an 18-2 win over Immaculate as Schmidt tripled and drove in five runs and Alberico was 3-for-3 in an 18-0 win over Kolbe-Cathedral.
The locals were slated the meet Bunnell on Wednesday afternoon in Stratford and will host Lauralton Hall on Friday at 5 pm. Brookfield, Stratford and Masuk (Thursday, 7 pm, at Treadwell) will close out the regular season next week.

BOYS TENNIS
Newtown 5, New Fairfield 2; Newtown 7, Stratford 0; Newtown 7, Immaculate 0
After its South-West Conference team playoff hopes were dashed in a recent loss to Brookfield, the Newtown High School boysâ tennis team rebounded with three solid wins to improve to 7-4 overall, 7-2 in the SWC.
The Nighthawks topped New Fairfield (5-2), Stratford (7-0) and Immaculate (7-0) with tough matches against Joel Barlow, Pomperaug and Weston closing out the regular season schedule.
âThe win (over New Fairfield) was a welcome one,â said head coach Marty Margulies, âbecause it virtually assures us of finishing the season with at least a .500 record and thereby qualifying to send the maximum number of players to the post-season state tournament, which was one of our goals this spring.â
The locals did not coast through the win over New Fairfield, but had to fight hard in every match. Drew Adamek defeated Tyler Brown 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 1 singles as Adam Feldman and Dan Cassidy fell to Deith Bevans and Grag Joram 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles. Max Margulies earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Draft at No. 3 singles while Mario Roehrs earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mansur Tokmouline at No. 4 singles and Adam Wenick and Evan Batzer earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over Christian Belisarios and Brian DâAngelo at No. 2 doubles.
âNew Fairfield was a tougher opponent than it has been in the past,â said coach Margulies, âand I was especially proud of the boys who played those four close winning matches because they held off late comebacks, which is very difficult to do under pressure.â
Against Stratford, the âHawks had to adjust their lineup due to a season-ending injury suffered by Chris Meier on the soccer field. Margulies and Roehrs stepped up a slot and responded easy sweeps. Peter Griffiths filled in at No. 4 singles and Alex DeBrantes and Evan Ritzinger played their first doubles match together as the locals gave up just one game out of the 84 contested on the afternoon.
Against Immaculate, Adam Feldman stepped into the No. 4 singles slot and earned a hard-fought 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 win over Matt Rogers as the rest of the team coasted to wins and guaranteed themselves at least a .500 overall record.

GOLF
Weston 156, Newtown 185; Brookfield 164, Newtown 167; Newtown 151, Joel Barlow 164
After suffering two losses in a row, the Newtown High School golf team needed someone to step up and thatâs just what Billy McCann did.
The junior fired a blistering one-under-par 33 on Tuesday afternoon to lead the Nighthawks to a 151-164 win over Joel Barlow. The only thing that kept McCann from earned the well-deserved medallist honors was Lee Summerlin, who also shot a one-under-par 33.
And, thus, where the âHawks won this match was on the back end where Steve Oberstadt shot a 3-over 37, Pat Daly shot a 6-over 40 and senior co-captain Dave McLaughlin carded a 7-over 41. The Falcons received rounds of 41, 44 and 46 and dropped to 4-5 overall while the âHawks improved to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the South-West Conference.
The locals needed the win after getting pounded by Weston, 156-185, at Aspetuck Valley Country Club last week and suffering a disappointing 164-167 loss to Brookfield at Sunset Hills on Monday.
In the loss to the Trojans, Oberstadt was the low man for Newtown with a 7-over 43 while Weston had three men break 40 for the afternoon. In the loss to Brookfield, Oberstadt fired a 4-over 39 and Daly added a 6-over 41 but Brian Heckman (37) and Christian Lamere (40) were just a little bit better.
The locals were slated to host Masuk on Thursday before visiting Immaculate (Richter Park), Bethel (Rock Ridge Country Club) and Stratford (Mill River Country Club) next week.

GIRLS TENNIS
Newtown 7, New Fairfield 0; Newtown 7, Immaculate 0; Newtown 6, Stratford 1
Oh, a 11-0 record looks mighty good â especially considering the additional statistic of 73 wins in 77 individual matches â but the Newtown High School girlsâ tennis team knew its toughest test of the season came on Wednesday (after press time) against South-West Conference rival Joel Barlow.
While the Lady Falcons went into the match with a 9-2 record with losses to Pomperaug and Weston, the closest match the Lady Nighthawks had all year was a 5-2 win over Masuk at Wolfe Park in Monroe back on April 26.
A tough test indeed. But tough tests against Pomperaug (on Thursday) and Weston (May 17) still remain for the undefeated âHawks.
Last week, the locals breezed through matches against New Fairfield (7-0), Immaculate (7-0) and Stratford (6-1) and, at the time, were ranked No. 1 in the CIAC Class L rankings with Torrington, Cheshire, Greenwich, Simsbury and Southington all with one loss apiece.
Against New Fairfield, the âHawks lost just 16 of the 84 games with the No. 3 doubles tandem of Maxx Zimmer and Lauren DeFelice having the closest battle in a 6-3, 6-2 win over P. Nandakumar/A. Simoncelli.
Against Immaculate, the âHawks lost just 11 of the 84 games as Ashley Gabor blanked Mary Gover at No. 4 singles and Katie Serock and Jenna Moser blanked Mo Kilcullen and Megan Christianson at No. 2 doubles.
On Monday, Sarah Salbu stepped up to No. 1 singles for the day and suffered a 6-2, 2-6, 2-6 loss to Angelina Violante but the locals were scarcely challenged in any of the other matches, losing just seven of a possible 72 games.

GIRLS TRACK
Newtown 125, New Milford 25; Newtown 144, Stratford 6; Newtown 137, Hall 13
It was hardly a tune-up, but it still was three more wins for the Newtown High School girlsâ track and field team.
With easy wins over New Milford (125-25), Stratford (144-6) and Lauralton Hall (137-13) on Monday afternoon at Blue & Gold Stadium, the Lady Nighthawks improved to 11-0. But the real test for the locals comes next Monday when they tangle with Weston and Bunnell down in Weston to close out the regular season.
Alex Konneker (100 and 400 dashes), Sadie Ball 800 and 1,600 meters) and Ciara Simek (long jump and triple jump) were all double winners but Julie Landin (200 dash), Teresa Taylor (shot put), Jess Cosgrove (discus), Harriet Morgan (high jump) and Kayla Mesko (pole vault) were all individual winners while all three relay teams won.
Lindsay Weber (100 high hurdles), Elise DeRoo (1,600 and 3,200 meters), Alison McEmber (400 dash), Emily Weber (800 meters), Sadie Ball (high jump), Gabby Nastri (triple jump), Corey Stokes (discus), Emily Lockhart (pole vault), Kristi Nowak (javelin) and Sara Peters (long jump) all had second-place finishes.
How dominating were the âHawks? Out of 18 events, the locals grabbed 14 first-place finishes, 11 second-place finishes and 11 third-place finishes.
But things will get considerably tougher next week.

Head coach Ed Obloj is understandably excited about the bevy of talented, young sophomores on the Newtown High School boysâ track and field team.
Unfortunately, coach Obloj needed a little bit more than that to overcome a powerful New Milford team on Tuesday.
The Nighthawks dropped a 106-44 decision to the Green Wave, but slammed Stratford 129-21 to improve to 7-3 overall.
The âHawks swept a quad meet last Friday, pounding Notre Dame (124-26) and New Fairfield (109-41) and slipping past Masuk (78-72).
A tri-meet with Weston and Bunnell next Tuesday will close out the regular season.
Last week, Will Jacob (100 hurdles), Charlie Baldour (1,600 meters), Scott Nichols (800 meters), Eric MacKnight (3,200 meters), Ben Snyder (100 dash) and Chris Nuelle (pole vault) were all individual winners while the 4x800 relay team captured first and sent the Nighthawks on their way to a sweep of New Fairfield, Notre Dame and Masuk.
Kevin Hoyt (1,600 meters), Jeff Lipnick (300 hurdles), Matt Cole (3,200 meters), Mike Mitchell (high jump) and Jamie Goodwick (triple jump) all earned second-place finishes.
On Tuesday, only Baldour (1,600 meters) and Nuelle (pole vault) had individual first-place finishes.
Nuelle vaulted 11-0.

A little less than a month ago the Newtown High School baseball team enjoyed a thrilling win over South-West Conference rival Pomperaug at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, New York. On Monday, the Panthers returned the favor.
Brian Marcinek rapped a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth, enabling the Panthers to rally back from a 1-0 deficit enroute to a 3-1 win. It was the second loss in a row for the Nighthawks, who fell to Wilton on Saturday and dropped to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the South-West Conference.
âWeâre definitely slumping right now,â said head coach Carl Strait. âAgainst Pomperaug we were trying to make things happen, but we stranded 10 runners and left the bases loaded twice. Itâs just one of those things; everyone has got to slump eventually.â
The âHawks collected just three hits off John Sharkey of Pomperaug, one of those a double by Steve Vichiola. The locals snapped a 0-0 tie in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Mike Tibbetts, but the Panthers rallied in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.
It was an unfortunate loss for Steve Marks, who dropped to 4-2 on the year despite scattering just five hits and striking out four batters.
After improving to 11-2 with a 5-4 win over Immaculate and a 10-1 win over New Milford last week, the Newtown offense has struggled to get hits ⦠especially timely ones. The locals collected just five hits in a 5-4 loss to Wilton on Saturday.
âWe shot ourselves in the foot there,â said coach Strait. âWe were up 4-2, but made three straight throwing errors.â
The âHawks visited Bunnell at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport on Wednesday and are scheduled to host Joel Barlow on Friday (weather permitting). Brookfield, Stratford and Masuk will close out the regular season next week.
âThe kids are still up,â said coach Strait, âand weâre moving on.â
Against Immaculate last week, Ryan McGrath went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Alex Dolan tripled in a run to key the 5-4 win. Dan Murdoch whiffed five batters in five innings of work and picked up the win with relief help from Steve Marks, who fanned three batters in two innings.
Against New Milford, McGrath banged out three long doubles â first to right center, then to the left field corner, and then to left center â and drove in two runs to power the offense. Mike Tibbetts was 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI while Joe DeVellis and Brian Shimko each went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Alex Magoulas drilled a triple to right center and drove in a run.
Alex Dolan and Mike Chapin combined on a three-hitter with Dolan picking up his second win of the season.
