Injured Hiker Rescued From State Forest A 55-year-old man was rescued the morning of Saturday, September 19, from Upper Paugussett State Park after a hiking trip turned into a medical emergency.A 55-year-old man was rescued the morning of Saturday, September 19, from Upper Paugussett State Park after a hiking trip turned into a medical emergency.Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a paramedic, Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue, and firefighters from Hawleyville, Hook & Ladder, and Sandy Hook were dispatched at 6:55 am, initially to the Pond Brook state boat launch on Hanover Road. Hook & Ladder Chief Engineer Mike Aurelia was the commanding officer on the incident.The injured hiker, who was part of a group of five, had started the hike from the state boat launch at the intersection of Hanover and Pond Brook roads. He and the others were on one of the state forest’s blue trails, when he fell and dislocated his hip.Aurelia did not know if the patient, nor any of the other hikers, live in Newtown.The group had reportedly been hoping to view, from the Newtown side of Lake Lillinonah, eagles at the Shepaug Eagle Viewing area in Southbury.Aurelia set up a command post at Hanover and Silver City roads. He was joined there by members of the three responding fire companies.NUSAR sent a boat toward the area where the hikers were reportedly waiting. Firefighters also began heading on foot toward the location of the group in the woods.While first responders were assembling, a private boat on the lake located the group. The operator of the boat picked up the injured hiker and transported him to the town boat launch at the end of Hanover Road.The ambulance crew had moved to that location, at the end of Hanover Road. Joined there by a paramedic, those first responders were ready for the patient when the private boat arrived with him.By approximately 8:30 am, the injured hiker was being transported to a hospital.Aurelia said the four other hikers “walked out on their own.”

She was 87 years old.Only the second woman to serve on the US Supreme Court, Ginsburg was appointed by President Bill Clinton. She had served on the nation’s highest court since August 1993.She died of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer, according to a statement by the court.Friday afternoon, Governor Ned Lamont directed US and state flags in Connecticut to be lowered to half-staff “as a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding public service” of Ginsburg.“Tonight, the nation mourns the unimaginable loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg – a fierce and fiery champion for fairness and equality for all,” Lamont said. “Shattering the glass ceiling in the legal world, Justice Ginsburg overcame adversity both in and out of the courtroom – battling gender discrimination at a time when women were rarely serving as lawyers. She also fought cancer with rigor, rarely missing any days in court.“A giant inspiration and pioneer for women globally, Justice Ginsburg should not just be remembered for what she stood for but what she stood against. Our nation is greater for her tenacity, dissension, and adversity against injustice. As Justice Ginsburg put it best, ‘there will be enough women on the court when there are nine,’” the governor also noted.President Donald Trump also issued a proclamation, early Saturday morning, directing that flags at the White House and all public buildings and grounds and military facilities be flown at half-staff until the late Justice is interred. The date of interment has not yet been determined.The president has also directed that flags be flown at half-staff at all US embassies and other facilities abroad. The proclamation calls Ginsburg “a trailblazer, not only in the field of law, but in the history of our country.”Calling the late Justice “an inspiration to all Americans,” the President noted Ginsburg’s “commitment to the law and her fearlessness in the face of death,” saying those traits “inspired countless ‘RBG’ fans.”He also called her “A fighter to the end,” noting that the late Justice “defeated cancer and the odds numerous times — all while continuing to serve on the Court.Ginsburg has long served as “a as a role model to countless women lawyers. Her legacy and contribution to American history will never be forgotten,” Trump also stated in his proclamation.Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the US flag, all other flags, including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise, should also be lowered during this same duration of time.

Thank you for redirecting our attention back to when we could, collectively, mourn the lives of our fellow Americans without the political trappings that we find ourselves caught in today. May those who lost lives on Sept. 11 be remembered, loved, and honored.

Dear family of Mary Jo, As coincidence would have it I’ve been thinking a lot about Mary Jo this last month. No particular reason. Memories of her just popped into my head. As a child I was her next door neighbor living in Santa Ana. She was an absolutely wonderful neighbor, so generous and kind. She always spoke the truth to me. I would not have gone to college if it were not for her encouragement. I lost tract of Mary Jo somewhere in my twenties but always thought of her and wanted to see her again. She and her husband settled in Almanor and I in San Francisco where I still live. If there is a memorial after Covid is controlled, I hope that you will let me know. I would like to attend. Iran has been a growing problem in the Middle East as it's failing authoritarian regime, propped up Russia, who buys their oil, and China, through the Belt and Road Initiative. This is not simply an American concern, but a concern for all area states seeking peace, and was a major driver behind the historic peace agreement between Israel and the UAE, with more likely to come as a hedge against Iran.
