Fence Damaged

At about 10 am on September 19, someone driving an unknown vehicle northward on Hawleyville Road, near its intersection with Farrell Road, struck and damaged fencing at 59 Hawleyville Road, police report. Police ask anyone with information on the fence damage to contact them at 426-5841 or 270-8888.

Narragansett Trail

Sometime between 11 pm on September 20 and the early morning hours of September 21, someone damaged several mailboxes positioned along Narragansett Trail in Sandy Hook. Police ask anyone with information on the vandalism to contact them.

Toy Car Theft

Between the late night hours of September 20 and early morning of September 21, someone stole a child’s toy electric car from the front yard of a home on Miya Lane in Sandy Hook. The small white toy car is a two-door convertible with orange striping. Police are investigating the theft and ask the public for help in solving the crime.

South Main DUI

Police report that at about 9 pm September 21, they saw an erratically driven 2002 Saturn cross southbound South Main Street’s centerline several times. Police said they stopped the auto and gave motorist Raymond Harris, 50, of Bridgeport sobriety tests, which he failed.

Police charged Harris with driving under the influence and failure to drive to the right. After processing the arrest, police released Harris on a $90 bond for an October 14 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Motorcycle Theft

Sometime between noon and 3 pm on September 7, someone stole a red Honda “dirt bike” motorcycle from a garage at a Brushy Hill Road residence, police report. Police are investigating the burglary/larceny and ask anyone with information about the crime to contact them.

Burglary/Larceny

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Michael Pearlman, 20, of Durham turned himself in at the police station on September 19.

Police charged Pearlman with two counts of third degree burglary, two counts of third degree larceny, and one count of sixth degree larceny.

The detective unit conducted an extensive investigation into crimes that occurred at two Taunton Lake Road area residences, from which Pearlman allegedly stole household items, according to police. Police said they recovered thousands of dollars worth of stolen items, which had been sold.

Pearlman is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court September 25 to answer the charges.

Oak Ridge Road

Sometime between 3 and 9 pm on September 6, someone stole a white mailbox from 16 Oak Ridge Road and stole a handmade wooden mailbox from 18 Oak Ridge Road. Oak Ridge Road is a residential street linking Hattertown Road to Eden Hill Road. Police are investigating the thefts and ask the public for help in solving the crimes.

Playground Damaged

Sometime between the evening of September 12 and morning of September 15, someone damaged playground equipment and fencing at the Newtown Congregational Church nursery school playground at 41-A Main Street, police report. Police ask anyone with information on the vandalism to contact them.

Jeep Vs Plymouth

Motorist Brandi Manville, 24, of Southbury, who was driving a 1990 Plymouth Voyager minivan southward on Mt Pleasant Road near Tory Lane about 10:40 am September 20, told police that a white Jeep Laredo, which was traveling behind her, struck the rear end of the Plymouth, passed the Plymouth on the right, and then drove off southward at high speed.

Manville was not injured in the accident, police said. Police said they verbally warned Manville for failure to renew her driver’s license and failure to carry a vehicle registration. Police ask anyone with information about the identity of the Jeep’s driver to contact them.

Route 34 Accident

Police report an accident at the intersection of Route 34 and Stone Bridge Trail in Sandy Hook at about 3:11 pm September 20, in which First Selectman Herbert Rosenthal, 57, was a passenger in one of the vehicles. There were no injuries.

Police said Michelle W. Rosenthal, 53, of 70 Main Street was driving a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, westward on Route 34, and then slowed to make a right turn onto Stone Bridge Trail. Michelle Rosenthal is the first selectman’s wife.

At that time, motorist Gina Ahearn, 37, of 35 Underhill Road, was driving a 1997 Mercury Sable station wagon westward behind the Jeep, police said.

The Mercury, which carried two child passengers, was unable to stop in time and struck the right rear door of the Jeep as it was making the right turn, police said.

Mr Rosenthal owns the Jeep in which he was a front seat passenger, police said. Legislative Council member Tim Holian, 49, of 3 Wendover Road, also was a passenger in the Jeep.

Both vehicles received minor damage in the collision. Police issued Ahearn a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

SUV Vs SUV

Motorist Heather Heyburn, 34, of Waterbury was driving a 1999 Toyota RAV-4 sport-utility vehicle eastward on Church Hill Road in the “right turn only” lane for Commerce Road at about 11 am September 20, when motorist Nancy Jones, 50, of 15 Country Squire Road, who was driving a 2002 Acura MDX sport-utility vehicle, pulled out of the Newtown Cleaners parking lot to turn right onto eastbound Church Hill Road, police said.

The Toyota and the Acura collided. Newtown ambulance volunteers transported Heyburn to the hospital for treatment of back pain, police said. Jones refused medical treatment, police said. Police issued Jones an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way.

South Main Collision

Motorist Stanley J. McKenney, Jr, 41, of Danbury, who was driving a 2001 Chevrolet station wagon southward on South Main Street about 6:12 pm September 4, stopped to make a left turn onto Simm Lane, police said.

Motorist Nilander Oliveira, 25, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2002 Ford F-350 pickup truck southward, attempted to pass the Chevrolet on the right, but collided with it, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Oliveira an infraction ticket for passing on the right.

Acura Vs Deer

Motorist Leslie Wilker-Manfredonia, 52, of 18 Monitor Hill Road, who was driving a 1997 Acura 3.5-RL sedan westward on Orchard Hill Road about 3:40 pm September 17, encountered a deer, which went in front of the auto, resulting in a collision, police said.

Wilker-Manfredonia was not injured, police said. No enforcement was taken.

Rear-Ender

Motorist Margaret Reilly, 36, of 8 Possum Ridge Road, who was driving a 1998 Dodge Caravan minivan southward on South Main Street, came to a stop for traffic at about 3:30 pm on September 20, and was struck from behind by motorist Jenna Benson, 19, of 5 Morgan Drive, who was driving a 2002 Hyundai Accent, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Benson a written warning for following too closely.

 

Intersection Collision

Police report a collision at the intersection of Mile Hill Road and Route 34 about 1:30 pm September 20.

The crash involved a 1995 Saab 905 driven by Blaise LaPorta, 16, of 34 Lake Road, and a 1997 Ford Taurus station wagon driven by Barbara Booth, 66, of Monroe, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued LaPorta an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way.

Auto Vandalized

Sometime between September 19 and 21, someone vandalized an auto that was parked in a parking lot at Forecast International at 22 Commerce Road, police report. The vandal smashed the auto’s front and rear windows, slashed a tire, and dented its roof.

The damage done is first degree criminal mischief, which is a felony. Damage is estimated at more than $1,500. Police are investigating.

Glover Avenue

Police report a two-vehicle accident near 15 Glover Avenue at about 8:13 am September 22.

Motorist Paul Morris, 68, of 15 Glover Avenue, who was driving a 1991 Volvo 740 station wagon westward on Glover Avenue, slowed to make a right turn into his driveway, police report.

Motorist Susan McNulty, 42, of 182 Boggs Hill Road, who was driving a 1999 Isuzu Trooper, then struck the Volvo from behind, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued McNulty an infraction ticket for following too closely.

Insurance Violation

Police said they charged Christian Valencia, 24, of Shelton on a warrant on September 6, listing a count of failure to have automotive insurance. The charge stems from a June incident. Valencia was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on September 23 to answer the charge.

Reward Offered

Police are investigating instances of vandalism in which someone spray-painted graffiti on signs at both entrances to the Tilson Woods residential subdivision in Sandy Hook. The signs are located at the entrances to the development at Washington Avenue and at Philo Curtis Road.

The developers of Tilson Woods are offering a $200 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators. Persons with information on the criminal mischief may contact the Tilsons at 426-8079.

Moving Violation

Police report they charged motorist Robert C. Pixley, 22, of 48 Bear Hills Road on September 22 with driving while under suspension. After processing the charge, police released Pixley on a $50 bond for an October 7 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Truck Down Bank

Sometime on September 19 or the morning of September 20, someone pushed a parked Dodge Dakota pickup truck down an embankment at a parking lot at an office building at 27 Glen Road in Sandy Hook, according to police. The incident is under investigation.
