Fifteen golfers spent the early part of April 29 at Newtown Country Club, where they helped one high school student raise funds for the Newtown Ecumenical Workcamp Servants (NEWS).

Newtown High School junior Andrew Goldsmith is one of 33 young adults who will be heading in late June to Biloxi, Miss., along with eight chaperones, as part of this year’s NEWS mission trip. The group will be working with Back Bay Mission to help rebuild homes and provide other forms of support for identified communities on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.

On Monday, Andrew welcomed golfers and NEWS board members for a Par 3 event. Funds were raised through entry fees, including an option to re-tee as many times as a player wanted, and a 50-50 raffle.

Golfers teed off at 9 o’clock, and proceeded to enjoy a three-hole challenge in beautiful weather.

Workcampers raise funds ahead of each annual trip to cover the cost of transportation, materials, and chaperone tuition. NEWS is in its 30th year of hosting mission trips. Recent events for the 2024 trip have already included a poinsettia sale and the annual breakfast that welcomes up to 200 guests.
