Newtown Public Schools will close three hours early today, November 15, and preschool has been canceled for the day, due to approaching weather.

Due to the early dismissal, all afternoon activities will be canceled at Newtown High School, including TAP, Parent Conferences and tonight's opening night performance of The Crucible, according to a post on the high school's Facebook page around 7:15 this morning.

An early season winter storm is impacting the East Coast states, and areas west, according to the National Weather Service. According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for 2 pm this afternoon to 4 am Friday, November 16.

Mixed precipitation is expected, as of 7:25 am November 15. Total snow accumulations for Newtown this morning are being listed by the weather service for 1-3 inches and ice accumulations of around two-tenths of an inch are expected. Winds may gust as high as 35 mph.

"Plan on slippery road conditions," the weather service is advising. "The hazardous conditions will impact the evening commute."

A National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Expect slippery roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.
