Following a February 6 public hearing, Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) members unanimously approved a site at 26 Hawleyville Road (State Route 25) as a suitable location for a proposed gas station.

BRIDGEPORT— Lawyers for Alex Jones, host of the controversial internet-based Infowars program, have asked a Connecticut Superior Court judge to move to another part of the state two pending defamation lawsuits against Jones in connection with Jones’ portrayal of the 2012 Sandy Hook School shooting incident as a hoax.

During its regular meeting February 4, the Board of Selectmen learned that Town Finance Director Robert Tait has finalized plans for offering bonds for sale and a planned refunding of bonds that he said would generate nearly a quarter million dollars in interest savings.

After making the position known to current town staff members, Newtown’s Human Resources Department has opened an application period for a newly-created position that will oversee the Social Services, Senior Services, and some duties currently handled by the Center for Support and Wellness (CSW).

The Board of Selectmen completed its work on the municipal side of the 2019-20 budget request February 4 and moved it to the Board of Finance after making several late adjustments.

The Board of Education unanimously approved its 2019-20 budget for $78,104,410, a roughly 2.7 percent increase from the current year’s budget, at its February 5 meeting.

The law firm of Shipman & Goodwin, which was retained by the Board of Education four years ago, is also currently suing the Town of Newtown. First Selectman Dan Rosenthal sees a conflict of interest in that, and would like to terminate the practice as the school district's legal representative as soon as possible.

Temporary traffic shifts associated with safety improvements and resurfacing are expected to affect travel on I-84, in both directions, in the vicinity of Exit 9 through Exit 10, as early as February 11.
