Storm Bringing Postponements, Cancellations

Ahead of a winter storm that could bring 5 to 8 inches of snow across the region by midday Monday, Town Players of Newtown have announced the postponement of auditions planned for Sunday and Monday evenings, March 3 and 4.

The National Weather Service is watching a storm that it says could dump up to 9 inches on Newtown. A Winter Storm Warning went into effect at 1 pm Sunday, March 3, and will remain in effect until 7 am Monday, March 4.

The entire state is currently under a Winter Storm Warning. The warning that includes Newtown is calling for “moderate snow, heavy at time … for northeastern New Jersey, southern Connecticut and portions of southeastern New York.” As with most warnings of this type, the weather service is advising that “travel could be very difficult” during the warning period. “The hazardous conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”

Town Players of Newtown was the first organization to contact The Newtown Bee ahead of the storm. Director Gene Golaszewski had been planning to host auditions for  The auditions have been postponed to Sunday and Monday, March 10-11. Funny Money, the next production for the local community theater, on Sunday and Monday, March 3-4.

Local businesses, organizations, et al that need to announce cancellations or postponements due to the weather are invited to contact The Newtown Bee to share that information. Monday Additions

As had been announced late Sunday afternoon, all Newtown public schools are closed Monday, March 4. 

Town of Newtown offices will be opening at 10 am Monday. In a CodeRED message sent out Monday morning, Newtown Emergency Communications Center Director Maureen Will said all non-essential Town employees should report to work at that hour. 

C.H. Booth Library will be opening late on Monday. The library will open at 11:30 am. 

Newtown Youth & Family Services will open at noon today. 

The Resiliency Center of Newtown will also open at noon today. Staff will reassess late morning a full-day closure will be needed. 

The entire state of Connecticut, as well as sections of surrounding states, are under a National Weather Service Winter Storm Warning for March 3-4. Newtown, according to the weather service, could see up to 9 inches of snow by midday Monday.  (National Weather Service graphic)
